Hi,

I've gotten a lot of answers from the forums here, but now I really need help with a problem. I've put together several computers before, but this is the first one where I used a do-it-yourself cpu heatsink. I have a sk6, with a 38cfm fan. Some Gelvet thermal paste came with the heatsink, and the instructions said to just "place the Gelvet thermal pad on the center of the heat sink base". Of course, things weren't that simple. There were 2 pieces to the thermal pad, a black velcroish square, and a sticky clear square with the peel off. I didn't know what went where, so to sum things up: I had the clear square on the center of the heatsink, and the black thing under (on top) of the clear square, with the black part facing the cpu core. I had no idea what I was doing, as the heatsinks I used to deal with came pre assembled, and all I had to do was peel off the sticker on the bottom. But I guess I had the setup mixed up somewhere, and I'm pretty sure my brand spanking new 1.4 bird is deep fried and well done now. I was able to get to the IDE detection part during my first post, at which point, the computer just froze. After hitting reset, I got as far as the ram count during post, before freezing again. After a 2nd reset, the computer will not even post. I did notice a very strong burnt smell coming from the case, and when I removed the heatsink, a good portion of the black square melted, and half of it stuck to my cpu's core; there's also some white glue on the bottom of my heatsink, where the clear square was. My computer ran for about 20 seconds total before dying. Very tragic. Is there anything I can do now other than to order another cpu? Also, is it possible that I fried my mobo too? Ram? Or any other parts for that matter?

Also, can somebody please post instructions on how I should install my sk6? I don't have much experience handling heatsinks, and it took me awhile, in fact, to figure out how to get it off my cpu. I've read about arctic silver and "lapping". Should I just get some artic silver and spread it all over the bottom of the hs, and put it on top of my cpu? What's lapping? Any, any, insight will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What I SHOULD be using tonight:

AMD 1.4ghz @ 0ghz
Asus A7M266
256MB PC2100 Crucial
60GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60
Gainward GeForce3 GS
(ThermalRight SK-6 + Delta 38) - Gelvet thermal pad
CMI-8738 (yep, the built in stuff...getting a santa cruz next week)

What I am using:
Pent 120@133
40mb ram
28k modem
1mb video memory
Packard Bell ('nuff said)

Sounds like bad luck:eek: . Try & return the chip then hopefully get a replacement. Get some Artic SilverII & go to their site for the instructions on how to use it. Sorry to hear about your chip, when you get that strong burnt smell it usually means only one thing:( . Oh yeah before I forget, WELCOME TO THE OVERCLOCKERS FORUM.

Sorry to hear of your trouble.
Your motherboard and memory should be ok.
For how to use artic silver go to www.articsilver.com they have a instruction page with pictures.

The instructions that come with the sk6 are poor.
The heatsink mounting strap can usually be but on using just fingers rather than using a screwdriver and its safer.
The wires that hold the fan should be hooked on the heatsink then clipped onto the fan.
I never messed with the included thermal pad so no clue as to how it was supposed to work.
