...when your optical drive is external!
Simple little mod involving packing tape on the desk and drive itself, and double-sided mounting tape between them. The packing tape is because mounting tape like that always leaves residue that is a pain in the ass to get off. I might have to tape it directly to the desk as well because it vibrates a little.

Heh. Cool.
So what happens when the tape glue fails? Is there a backup support or does it just hit the floor?

That's whats so good about it. When it drops there's a little message on top of it that says "Get a DVD burner jackass!"

Well, it doesn't look like it was hard to do, but it does sound like a fun idea to be sitting there and feed your CD into your desk as your computer reads it. I kinda wanna try it now.

aw comeon this is a killer mod! ^^
a RESPECTABLE mod usually requires skill/effort, but i give a nod to the creative ones too...
this mod does need a little more effort though - you could stealth the whole pc in this way so that you didn't need a case - just have everything taped/bolted to the underside of your desk....
on the longevity of the tape: you can make this look a lot cleaner if you wish, and probably get a lot more life expectancy, by using carpet tape (basically industrialish double-sided tape you get at the hardware store for bonding heavy carpet to concrete - that'll hold the heavier stuff like the PSU well
i'd be more worried about damaging things with my legs/chair than from droppping things however... if you can come up with an easy solution for that you've got an ultimate stealth mod that'd be very original...
i encourage you to continue the idea - and be sure to let us know if you can get everything but the monitor/speaker/input bonded down there ^^
HAhahah... Beutiful. *Stops to applaud* That is wonderful. If i had never seen it, the thought never would have occured to me.
I saw a usb to ide adapter on pricewatch, w/ a power adapter and thought to try a hard drive in a creative place, but the convienince of a cdrom, uder the desk would be great, popping out above my keyboard tray. Keep experimenting w/ that kind of stuff, it's really cool, and you never know, that cdrom could save your life.

Yeah, I thought about putting it directly in front of me, but then I realized that it wouldn't really be any more "accessible", and I'd probably hit it a lot with my legs and/or knees. Another thing is the noise, it does make a slight hum when running, and that would be annoying while watching a movie.

In the first picture you can see a little hutch above the computer. I have often thought that if I get a second computer for whatever purpose I might need it for, I'd probably bolt everything upside down on the underside of that. What's a computer if you can't see it? ;)

I didn't see any mention of this. This is funny as all .... :D
Very creative indeed. Made me laugh out loud in my lonely little windowless office cluttered with computers and papers.
Thanks.
edit: I was just in Austin a few weeks ago. I walked around that main strip (is that 6th street?). I ended up at the state capital too. Very nice looking. I only mention it because I very rarely get to leave my office let alone the state and I see you are from Austin.

Now you're thinkin!
And everything bolted could be resting on rubber washers to dampen all the vibrations!
only problem is what do you do when its moving time someday and you need to move your desk?
very cool idea though... gee i wish i had a desk like that one now (i have no "hutches" in either of my desks :( )
