Going to install Windows2000 soon. Currently running 98Se, and I'd like to dual boot with both, as I've heard that 2000 doesn't like some games, but is more stable.
General comments/pointers/advice wanted here!
Thanking you all kindly in advance!!!!

I put in 2000 almost 1 1/2 years ago and haven't looked back. I love it, have no issues with popular games that are desinged to run on NT, have no stability issues, and the networking is great.
This is the ONLY OS Microsoft got right.

I personally find that WinME is the fastest OS on my system, however I do like the stability of Windows2000

win2k is the only good operatings system that MS has released
fast stable and reliable
i have never had problems running any game under win2k
and unlike other OS's,if a program crashes,it doesnt take out the whole system.
my system has run weeks without needing to be restarted
and it runs faster than win98
the only thing is to make sure all your hardware is compatible
otherwise u amy have headaches
otherwise join us in the best Windows yet
:)
I like Win2k and when the rest of my stuff comes in for my new system.. that's gonna be what I install on it.. As for games.. I only ran into a couple problems but they were fixable :).

I also went to win2k about a year and a half ago and never looked back. It is stable and fast . I havent found many games that won't run on it . It even runs on my crappy dfi socket 7 motherboad with old generic ethernet 10base-T/10base-2 combo cards. IMHO win2k is the best os M$ has ever put out other then dos and that wasn't realy their's.
Win2K Rocks! I put server on my duallie as a test for a customer's pc and was so impressed that I went out and got Pro for myself!
The only problem I've had was with the service packs: my IDE controller is one of the apparently few that do not work with the updated atapi.sys that sp1 and 2 install. The fix was easy after finding the problem.
Duallie now flies, doesn't crash and I can use my usb junk as well.
I'm even tempted to get server so I can get rid of my NT domain controller!

I just installed Windows2000 yesterday and am loving it. Bootups takes a little longer, but periodic reboots to increase performance are no longer necessary. win2k pro is a little more difficult to manage/setup than win98, but the extra work is well worth it.
I have gotten Max Payne and UT to run real well, I don't think you'll have any problems with newer games. Setting permissions can be a little annoying at first though. I'm running NTFS and have ultra dma 100 working properly, but disk access seems a tad bit slower than win98. Great thing about NTFS is that you can secure any adult content, sensitive files, etc from prying eyes.

i put it on both of my systems
kaboom the old one went crazy fast all of the suden.
and the new comp went signifigantly faster too.
love it.
dont like ME aka ****** editon.:D
Windows 2000 sucks.
I'm sick and tired of my machine always being on and never having to reboot from crashes. Hell that was half the fun of Win9X!
I will add though, if you want to install with fat instead of ntfs, dont bother using 2k. My friend had the bright idea of doing that so he could have some more compatability with his games, and his system crashes as much as it did with ME.
I play Everquest, and although EQ still crashes on rare occasion, at least it doesnt crap on my whole system and make me reboot, I just re-start the game after ending the task.
The only thing I've had to reboot my system for in months is issues with my DSL dropping and not coming back up.

what is EQ like nowdays? I quit playing right before they added levels 51-60. i quit due to the many nerfs on my 41 necro. old vallon zek was fun to play on though. loved killing those little pecks:D

Well, I dont really play anymore either. I've hopped on a friends account 4 or 5 times in the last 3 months.
It was the same old boring Evercamp it always was. I played on Tallon since it came up, and I couldnt have played as long as I did had I not been on a PvP server. Half my time playing was spent PK'n. I honestly dont know how people can play as long as they have on those other servers.
My highest characters were a 53 hum druid, 43 hum paladin, 51 trl shaman, 37 de mage, among quite a few others I had over the course of two accounts.
I sold the druid/pally account soon after Kunark came out for $750, and my shaman/mage only went for $400 3 months ago.
Not a bad return I guess, got to enjoy myself and get some of my monthly fees back on top of it!
I use to dual boot Win 2k and 98 because i heard that alot of stuff wasn't compatible with win2k but actually i hardly ever used win 98.. Win 2000 is a good OS
I give Win2k a thumbs up as well....stability stability stability. :) The only time I've encountered any kind of problem was because a software program I loaded was incompatible with it...be careful what you install and you'll be fine.
I put in w2k about a month ago, No problems with anything so far.
Games run really good!! I switched to w2k cause of winMe,
I was always rebooting and freezing, crashing and so on and so on.
go for it w2k is better than Me and 98!!

I was just looking for a thread like this. I just set up 2K and 98se in dual boot. Wanted to check out 2K for compatability issues. Took me a little time to find drivers for my NIC card but now all is well. So far I havn'e found anything that won't run on it. Killer stable. As said b4 if a game does crash (hardly ever) it doesn't kill the system. I have been playing UT HalfLife Q3 lately. To me, and this may be wrong, the display looks a little sharper. Games and the desktop apps. I might format and finally move away from 98se. "sob, sob"
Go for it samu !! I went through win98,winMe and duel booted
both with w2k. I wiped out everything and did a clean install
with w2k and its great!!!
Drivers are a must for it to run good!!!
i like how there isn't any program that Win 2k can't end tsk on :)

LOL almost as funny as the guy who calls ME the RE (****** edition)
I like win2k, and I'll agree that you should use NTFS...
only, with ntfs, a 98 boot disk won't work anymore, and that can be a pain if you want to change partition info/sizes
One word of warning, be VERY careful in setting your security policies (if you're setting any at all), such as access rights on files, etc...one little mistake can give you hours of headaches
Im skepticle about people who run there machines for weeks on end with win2k (unless its a server or your just doing basic stuff). Sure it beats the crap out of 9x for stability but if your pushing the os hard your gonna have to reboot a couple of times a week.
I've never had any real problems w/ Windows 2000 Professional. No other OS has EVER touched my HD. If you install w/ NTFS, the file sharing permissions are a little bit hairy, but once you figure all of those out, you'll be flying. It'll run almost everything I throw at it (except for DOS stuff that requires Real-mode) and I've had it up for weeks on end w/o ever having to reboot. Its hugely stable, and if something crashes, it won't take the whole OS w/ it. Hell, even if Explorer crashes, Windows2000 just restarts it. This is the BEST os that MicroSoft has ever released.

You know, I have installed win2k on a server and I like the way it has been performing in that application. As I stated before, I installed this earlier this week on my machind in dual boot. After a few days of beating on this OS I can honestly say that Win2K is not only more stable but seems to run apps a little quicker. My whole machine seems a little snappier. I noticed this on the machine I installed it on for server use also. I have yet to be kicked out of a game or app for no reason as I would in Win 98.
Also it has more on disk support for hardware. I have a Turtle Beach sound card and a logitech usb mouse, along with a few other peices that I had to install seperatly in 98. Win 2K took care of the drivers during the install and the sound card actually seemed to perform better.
I can agree this is probably the best work MS has done. At least until XP........
