View Full Version : WinXP - Home and/or Professional

Hey guys,

Now that WinXP is to be released soon, the big question I'm facing is, do I go for the cheaper Home or the more expensive Professional? Am hoping that some who were beta testers/warez kiddies give me an insight into this new OS. Thoughts include:

-What's the difference, technically?
-What does Home have that Professional do not? (quite obvious the other way around)
-Would Home be faster than Professional or vice versa? If so, what aspects i.e. 3d/spreadsheet/surfing/games

I'm getting the impression that Professional would be more bloated than Home due to all the user management/file protection/etc. Is this a correct assumption?

Also, does the higher price of Professional justify its benefits over Home or should it be left only to the corporates?

Cheers.

The home version is a trimmed down version and would be a better all around setup for gaming and speed. The cost is nice too!!

So what your saying that all the people here who bought the simple version to save on performance price, and disk space are "retards" for doing so? Are you sure? I would think paying more money for something I would never use is kinda "silly".

The pro version won't be worth the extra $$$ for what most people in here do. It has the NT kernel, the 98 kernel is what's always made me hate the home versions of Windows. I probably won't switch anytime soon, anyway. I'll see what comparisons of home and pro look like, I tried out pro and found it to be quite bloated.

I get it Robb..:), But I think the Pro version is not worth the extra $100. I have not played with the home version so we will see once I get my hands on a copy from the M$ girlfriend.

I heard somewhere that the home version only will work with 1 cpu whereas the pro version will take more. Any hard info on that?

With both systems you will have to buy one OS for each computer. If you are talking about dual-AMD setup, both will work. I have a new box of Home XP waiting for me at the M$ girliefriends house tomorrow. I will update as I begin a new adventure.

PS, I told the M$ girliefriend that for ANY lock-ups I receive, I get "something" else in return. OH come on, use your imagination!!

Windows XP Personal For home users, Personalized Welcome Screen, fast user switching
Windows XP Professional
Windows XP Professional 64bit
For corporate users. 2 processors, 4GB memory
Windows .NET Server
Windows .NET Server 64 bit
Small and medium server solutions: Supports 2 processors, 4GB memory.
Note: win2k Advanced server supports 4 processors!
Terminal Server only in Admin mode!

Windows .NETAdvanced Server
Windows .NET Server 64 bit
Business Critical Servers: Supports 8 processors, 8 GB memory, 2 node Clustering, 32 node Network Load balancing
Terminal Server application mode
Windows .NET Data center Server 32 bit (I assume)
Windows .NET Data center Server 64bit
Mission critical High availability: 32 processors, 64 GB, 4 node clustering, 32 node Network Load Balancing, Winsock Direct
Windows XP Embedded For PDA, and Thin Clients (WBT)
Windows .NET Webserver Stripped down server for webserver use only
Windows .NET Small Business Server (I assume) Multi Purpose server for small business

After testing both version, Home and Pro i've concluded this. If you use 98/ME then stick with Home. But if you use win2kpro then go with the Pro version. not hard to decide that.

He's talking about SMP. And no, the home version will not support SMP. The home version is based on a 9x Kernel and can't, and never will, support dual CPU's, where as the Pro version is based on 2000 supports SMP.

The home edition will have noithing to do with the 9x kernal. Both systems have the NT Kernal.

I agree with the bear, i my talks with my friend on the inside ( a coder for Microsoft on the NT project ) he told me that XP was a way to migrate all OS's to the NT core. Also, a little tidbit that he told me. There was NEVER supposed to be a 98 OR ME versions. They were SUPPOSED to move to NT after 95. He said that the developers would'nt have it and thretened to walk if the didnt do another version.

All from the horses mouth...

I'm using full-version (leaked) XP professional right now and it works fine. I don't know what the difference is, but if you look at my stats below you will see it works fine with my setup.

Yeah, I meant smp. I'm gonna see if I can get a copy of Pro through work. Sometimes being in education is worth it. I got office 2k for like 20 bucks, Office XP for like 25, WIn2k for free....sheesh.

ok so from what i understand is both versions home and pro both use the NT kernel, so does this mean that the home version will be just as stable as the pro version? and that the pro version just has more bells and whistles? because in the end stability will be the deciding feature for me..

Phil

It should be just as stable as the other versions. If you are buying a legit copy just get the home version, it's probabally a little more bloated and won't have all the features of the pro version but I wouldn't say that they are worth the extra cost.
