I've heard people saying how 6800's are much better than 9800's. I was wondering if they'll be able to say the same thing even after Half Life 2, which uses DX9, a specialty of ATi, comes out.

how the hell is your 9800pro not performing good. are you sure your card is running 4x/8x with hardware acceleration enabled fast writes off. or are you running the saphire 128bit one which sucks ass. it should run on high settings fine.

nvidia fixed the wrongs in their fx line in the 6200/6600/6800 lines. it will run dx9 really well so yeah. 6800 > all right now

Why compare apples and oranges? The 6800 is way better than the 9800. I do have to disagree on the point that Nvidia fixed what was wrong with their cards. This in game shimmering due to poor AA is pissing me off. New drivers better fix this or Im selling and buying an X800 XT.

my card is built by ati and is 256 bit 128mb. and it performs like garbage.. i have replaced once already thinking that i got a bad card, but it wasnt. it just blows. i formated and everything still get ****ty ass fps in cs:source. 80-100 fps on high with AA2X and AF2X, then as soon as action hits it drops to deep red, like 30-40. it sucks. it shouldnt do that. some parts of the maps i am 50fps , and there is no action i am by myself. so i dont understand. the omega drivers are working somewat better but still ****ty. not happy.

drops to 30-40? i dont see whats wrong with that if you're running at 1024. personally i can run cs:source fine at 1280, the only times it chokes is when it has to do a hdd read. (512 ram will do that to ya)

Well, 6800 is better just because it belongs to the next gracard generation.
As for 9800, I had just the same model , Build by ATI 9800Pro 128DDR and had no problems at all... yes x800 is better but comparing x800 with 9800 is just like comparing Dodje Viper with Mercedes CLK GTR :) or Ultra :))

This has been discussed in another thread. He likes silky smooth framerates (ie: 50 minimum) at all times, and the 9800 can't do it. It's not so much that the card sucks as that what he wants out of it is more than the card (or any pre-X800/6800) can deliver.

But when you factor in the price..........

The viper is a much better value, much similar to the 9800 vs. 6800/x800

i have a mobile barton at 2.56 ghz 512 ram 7200 rpm hd (eww load) and a saphire 9800p 128 and i get 70 min fps (50 in rly rly rly intense) and i max out my refresh rate at 120... i get 90 in open areas.....120 everyware else(aztec is killer :D).....maybe you just got a bad one :)

EDIT it was 100 max at 1024

800x600 is a better resolution with valve(most ppl use it on 1.6) and i like the way it looks so try that.

also all settings max cept aa and af 2xAA works great tho

i wish i had a nerf gun to blast away all the offtopic responses on my monitor ^^

to answer the question: yes, the 6800 is more powerful than the 9800np/pro/xt

will people be saying this after HL2 comes out? well some will say ATI rules just because it does (and i've been guilty of this in the past as well), but frankly i think the difference in FPS you'll get between these cards will warrant a few shiny pipes, considering you'll be able to crank up visual options that much more.

I think for the money spent, you should be damn happy with a 9800pro. i dont live in the states, but they are like... $160 down there now? less. the sapphires keep plumeting for the 256 bit version. it ALMOST makes me wish i was american.. but... no.

I baught a BBA version here in canada for $315 at future shop. they pricematched ncix.com *being in the online price wars game* I could have got a sapphire for $270 from ncix. but then there was shipping, and having to wait a week ect..
You complain about one of the newest games dropping down to 50 fps.. 40 fps..
Ill agree that 30 is probably a little low but 40 and 50 is certainly nothing to scoff at in half life 2. you should make sure you have all your bios features correctly set. drivers are set up right and you should overclock too. If you got a 9800 recently, there is a good chance you are getting a rv360 and it can be flahed. you never did mention overclocking or flashing it. soo.... try.

in the price war... I really dont think the current top end cards can beat the 9800. as it has been said by like EVERYONE. sure, you will have the best of the best... but. 6 months from now when the half generation comes out and the current top end cards can be baught at newegg for like ... $250-$300.. I dont know. I could live with 50 fps personally <_<.

dood comparing the 9800 to the 6800 is like comparing a voodoo 3 to a gforce 4. the 6800 pumps out almost(if not) twice the performance of any previous line(including 9800's)

and nvidia has been MUCH better with directx since their screwup with the gforce 5 line.
