I have Win98, WinXP, Win ME, and Win2k
WinME I tried and for some reason is made unstable...
Win98 I'm running rihg tnow, and for games I found it works pretty well. I will prolly upgrade to WinXP for my games too, because I heard it was a stable system, but I'm not sure, considering I can't run MBM on WinXP
I might install Win2k just for SETI for when I leave my cpu on. I play games, and therefore I can't use Win2k for working on, but I heard Win2k was pretty fast for SETI

I have not done a comparison of identical machines (hardware wise) running different operating systems. Some have said that Win2k is faster - but I really can't see how a Win2k vs Win98se machine could be significantly faster. Most of my machines are Win98se, a couple are Win2k, and if there is an efficiency benefit of Win2k - I just can't see it.

/me slaps his forehead
I forgot to upgrade to Win98SE
For me Win2k runs definitely faster. I have a PII300 (128mb ram at 66mhz), it did 21,5 hours/WU in winME and nowadays does 18,3hours/WU.
Also had it on my personal rig (800mhz), but win2k for a very short time (hd crashed). I still have to reinstall it but am somewhat short on time lately. My impression for the moment however was that win2k isn't much faster on it than winME. Still I would prefer win2k, as it is far more stable than winME.

Good to see you back Murphy. When are you going to get them 'mad horses' a stompin? Really miss the Wu's.
win me kicken butt over here .....
I hate WinME and I will hold a one man boycott of XP if I have to so I won't recomend either of them.
I wouldn't think any of them would be faster than the other for seti, maybe by a few minutes but I doubt there would be a consistant differances between them so use which ever you want to use. Og course if you have an smp machine then win2k is the best option
I have tested and there was very little difference on my systems. Win2k is more stable so it won out. Of course if you don't have much ram then 98 would be better. I don't like windows more errors aka ME. XP is actually about the same as 2k - after you spend your afternoon disabling all the crap they added to it.

I can't really say ME is faster than 98SE (what I have), cuz both machines aren't the same ! But my ME machine is faster (cuz the other has half the MHz, and is about 3 times slower !)

It isn't - I was signed up for the beta testing program.

Just go to www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsxp , but I think they stopped the beta testing version downloads (I didn't find it anywhere on the site so...)

You had to pay for it and register about 6 months ago. Each participant received an email with password and url for the download. The testing period is over since XP already went gold. It goes on sale in late October I believe. You might already be able to order a PC with it installed - haven't looked though.
As much as people are bashing it, it's not bad from what I've seen. I hate the activation part, but I've had no problems with it. Despite claims of being faster it isn't. Mainly because they've added so many extra features to the interface. You can actually configure it so it looks no different from 98 or 2k and that gets most of the speed back. Home users may like all those fancy features and the new appearance, but I couldn't care less. I want stability and compatibility. To test it out I installed it on an AMD 760 mobo and it recognized everything - no need to install 4 in 1 or patch anything. I spend a good hour configuring all that crap under 2k. It's nice to just load it and go.
