How to make a dvd from dat files?

my dad just sent me some home movies (from russia) that he converted to dvd
the only problem is that they're dat files??!?
i can play them on my computer, but not on the dvd player.. anyone know how i could make a dvd out of these?

That guide seems to be what you are looking for or at least a start. To get the extracted video onto a DVD that will work in a standalone player you'll probably need more info.
