i'm getting concerned because one of the drives is starting to make weird noises (high pitch whines, crunches, stuff like that)... what's a good way to back up around 300gb?

get your techie buddies together and see what free space they have and convince them to let you borrow all the hdds for as long as you need to get an rma?

That's pretty shady, and though I've considered similar things, I don't think I could ever feel ok actually doing it. I would strongly suggest you find a better way - taking advantage of larger corporations isn't nice, and hurts everyone.

its not that big of a deal, bestbuy makes enough moeny as it is, the return policy is set up for thins like this

He said cheap, not morally honest. ;) I would also suggest DVDs. Inconvenient? Yup. It'd be about 60 discs, but only cost you ~$30, for the discs.
