View Full Version : Some Newbie Questions - Joining Team

Having been a member of the OC Seti team since its inception, I decided why not join our Folding team as well. Well tonight I finally got around to downbloading the client, but as with any new thing I've got some questions.

1) Is there a CLC too, or is it only a screensaver?
2) Are there any 3rd party utils that allow caching such as Seti Driver does for Seti? I'm familiar with EM, but that doesn't appear to offer that feature.
3) The big question - I installed and started the screensaver, but it never asked me for a user name, email addy, or a team name. It just started running. How do you set that up and are there any options like 'auto transmit' such as you would use for an always on net connection?
4) Is the client multi threaded? I planned to put it on two of my dual cpu machines and run both Seti and Folding using processor affinity, but if it would benefit from SMP I'll devote both duals entirely to folding.

Guess that's about it for now. Looking forward to helping both teams, even if I won't be in 3rd place on the Folding team :)

Hey man, very nice of you to join us, we can sure use your help! :)

You really should download the console client, the screen saver is no good. When asked to sign up (this will happend the first time you run the client) you MUST sign up as:

yourname (www.overclockers.com)

...in order to join our team. So you would probably write something like:

TC (www.overclockers.com)

There is no caching feature in folding, as the new units depend on old units, so they need the units returned asap. (There is a 3 day limit). Instead of caching, a lot of people use multiple instances of the folding client. This is easy to set up using EM.

Welcome to the fold, FOLD ON brother!

Thanks for the welcome. I didn't poke around long enough at the folding site. All I saw was version 1.34 of the screensaver - seemed like the only version they had, but I finally found the console version - looks more like Seti. I hate the screensaver clients from both programs. Should be smooth sailing from now on :)

Oh - is this code multi threaded or not?

The code is not multithreaded but it was promised that it was to be MT in the 2.0 version if it ever arrives. The solution at the moment is to run multiple clients in their local folder which will take advantage of both processors. Caching was also promised in the upcoming version, but we'll have to see what happens when the client is actually released.

I got the console client running and was afraid I hadn't registered my name correctly, but now I see I'm on the team list - already got 15 units :)

Cool. Welcome to the team.
Nice SETI farm.

Right now I'm running once instance on each of my dual machines, but I plan on building a dual Athlon machine devoted entirely to folding. Not sure when I'll get that running.

I want to build a dual amd machine but can find a resonably priced mob. Have any ideas?

Oh ya welcome to the team!

one more question. Do I need the amd-m cpu or what ever they are call or can can I use any pair of cpu's?

Ditto on the mobo - that's the only "cheap" one I know of right now. I'd like to see some other brands with overclocking features.

I've heard some people say that regular Athlons will run fine in SMP, then other people say only the MP will. I have no first hand experience so I don't know, but I do know the MP core is much faster for Seti, and possibly folding as well. The price is coming down too, so I'd go with the MP's if you do build a dual box.

I already have one amd 1.2 266 I think I'll pick up that mob and another 1.2 and give it a try wrost thing would be I'd have to buy two mp chips. but I would have two 1.2 to make into folders. just may end up with three new machines. lol

I know I read somewhere that regular Athlons work just fine - and it was a reputable site, might have been Anandtech. AMD may be doing a little marketing thing trying to push the MP as the only chip that will work properly in SMP. The Palomino is faster for sure, but I have no idea if it's a requirement for SMP. Let us know how your project turns out. I just got a fat check as a wedding gift so I may spring for a tiger and another MP. It's one of those purchases that comes so much easier after a couple of night caps :D

Any TBird works fine as dual. The "MP" does not stand for multi processor, It stands for mobile processor, as in laptops etc, It runs cooler and uses less current.

Whatever it is AMD has got naming problems now :) They call this a mobile chip and sell it as a desktop package, and it sure as heck doesn't run cooler or use less power, in fact I've got one running side by side with a tbird at 1600, both using same HSF in the same case, same mobo and all and the MP is running hotter @ 1480. Next they decide to call their new cpu number 4 (they seem to have skipped 1-3) just like some other company, and now it looks like they're going to keep the speed a secret unless you have enough sense to use Hoda. I wonder how this will affect XP activation :D
