What program could I use to convert mp3's (or any file for that matter), to the standard format that will play on cd players?
If you are using Nero to burn the CDs it will convert MP3 automatically. Otherwise most any audio player can do this. foobar2000 (http://www.foobar2000.org) has an especially robust system for converting various formats to other formats.

that's the problem, normally I would use nero but it doesn't seem to like working. I would try and write something to a disk and it would just fail after the first write.

Ok, what kind of files are you trying to convert? What PC audio player do you use?
Windows Media Player will play mp3's. It will also allow you to burn regular audio cd's if you check options.
