View Full Version : Blowholes at top of the case?

Are these just for the sake of venting the air or does a fan go into the top hole? Thanks :)

blowholes ideally should have a fan on the to help ventialtion, normally you would have one blowing out so that it will exhaust the hot air from CPU althougth this depends on your case. Midtower case are good for blowhols although a dual fan power supply would do the same job.

heat rises so it is the best location for a vent.

i have 2 80mm blowholes in the top of my mid-tower between the psu and cd-rom drive. each has a 36cfm 80mm sunon fan in it, and they make a big difference to my case and cpu temps. i ran without them (and my 120mm intake blowhole on the side) for a while out of curiosity, and my temps soared. if you don't mind the noise, then go for it!

I think you'll find the power of convection in the case is enough to actually create quite a breeze without a fan in a top blowhole. The first time I ever cut a blowhole I didn't put a fan in it for a week, and found just having the blowhole with no fan was surprisingly effective (knocked about 10C off cpu temps, about 15C with the fan). Just try it without a fan and see how it works - I'm guessing you're thinking about noise here, so it can't hurt to try it :)

As mentioned above, just heats natural tendancy to rise will make a top blowhole effective without even throwing a fan in it.

However, a quiet Sunon 80mm fan or two running on a 10V fixed voltage regulator will add greatly to the effect.

Holy ****e.. thanks for all the responses.. if I were to just put a vent in.. without any fans at all what would I put to "cover" the hole.. a standard fan grill? or is there something like the grill with like a thin foamy type dust cover?

If your going fanless, a grill would be best. But if your going with a fan, either is fine. A filter, even though the fan is blowing through it, would keep dust out of the PC when it is powered off.

A dust cover on an exhaust fan doesn't make a lot of sense. Sure it does if that exhaust fan is on the top of the PC were dust might settle in through it while the PC is off.

Shouldn't you be Folding with that hardware? :D Should, but I only have one phone line, and use dial-up service. I like to be easily contacted at night incase there is an emergency.

I've just grown to despise dialup ;) and I hear DSL is better then cable.. /sigh.. but I dun care how I get my connnection :) It's all good hehe.

Radio Shack has a couple of 105mm fans that are pretty quite,I'v got 2 mounted on the bottem blowing in and 2 at top exhusting, they put out 65 cfm each and i'm real happy with my temps. they also have a fan that puts out 80cfm that's a 12 v fan,the ones i'm using are 120v that I modded the case some to use,i didn't want to tax the ps any.
