Intro
I wanted to start a post for the card I recently installed from super-terrific forum member ViperJohn. He mods radeon card and even some nvidia (see his page (http://imageevent.com/marginjohn/viperjohn) for contact info and pictures). I first spoke with him on October 28th, and now on November 15th, I have the card in my computer folding away and playing games like a maniac! At first I obviously wanted a xt-pe after my old pro died, and was refunded by newegg. And the built by ati models seems to always be the better overclockers. However as you probably know, there aren't m(any) to be had. And then I try to get a built by ati pro instead. same story. But couls you imagine? Good 'ol Viper had one already made, with around 20 hours on it! So I said, "yes please, what is your paypal account?" And Here I am, back in business after almost a month of downtime. Anyway enogh yacking. I am going to be posting benchmarks, pictures and the many things I have learned in the last month. Thank you ViperJohn!

very interesting! The reason I ask is that I noticed the top-scoring ati x800 pro cards use that driver! I'm shocked those scores have not been toppled by a newer driver.

Just touching up the "benchmarks" a bit. I haven't decided where to host. or whether to resize from the 1600x1200. My sister took some 8 or 10 megapixel shots. I will probably get them tonight or tomorrow.

Temperatures
Haha, this is a good time to apologize for my lame attempt at being organized. Anyway...
The card has active memory cooling, and a 60mm fan on the core attached to a rheostat. At full juice it reads about 26-27 at idle in a room that is probably 19-20C. After gaming for maybe 30 minutes or running 3D03, it was into the high 30's. Apparently, during his torture loops of 3DMark, it gets into the high 40's.
The temps are read from a diode planted in the heatsink (like inside it, not squished btwn. the hs and the core). Apparently, it is accurate to +/- 0.5C. While the thermoresistor on the card can be as far off at 15C! But I will try ATI tool in a while just for a comparison.

I meant shots of the card itself. I am assuming that Viperjohn added all those crazy fans to the mix. (correct me if I am wrong here).

Hmmm...The 8.07 hotfix are way faster than the old 4.5's were...at least for me anyway. Using
the 4.12's now to see what they will do.

e-mail is the best way to get in touch. after all, this is not his native forum!
Could people recommend software like riva tuner of ati tool for making overclock profiles? I am leaning to ati tool because it unloads back to the slower clock when you are out of 3D mode (not that the default clock is that low, LOL ;)). And I think Viper is a big fan of Riva Tuner? feel free to post what you like to use and maybe why.

Actually those are the 4.05 Beta's. I do not think the official 4.5's supported the x800's.
I suppose they could be faster for benchmarks but I am not going to load them to check. They
would be WAY slow in Doom3 and would have problem with many other games as well.

Yeah I do prefer RivaTuner myself. If you set the single click game profile shortcuts up
right RT will drop the cards clocks to what ever they were before you clicked the shortcut.
That would be the bios set clock unless you had the card clocked when you crated the
profile shortcut.

Actually this is one of two made by a friend of "Xenocide" (private message him (http://www.ocforums.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=41343)). They are laser cut at the place where he works. He also does a lot of extremely nice paint jobs, I hear. But contact was flakey. I talked to him through Xenocide, and it took forever from when I sent it to when I got it back. A good chunk of the summer, I can't remember how long. Here is his site to see a bit of his work: http://www.lunagenlabs.com/ . He made a really great custom waterbox for Xeno, really beautiful job. And I LOVE my side panel. But unless Xeno says otherwise I would look around to other places offering a service. The guy Xeno knows just does it as a hobby. I recently noticed http://www.mountainmods.com/ now offers a laser cutting service. I would definitely check them out. Mountain Mods or Xeno's friend can do any cutting you want. Doesn't have to be the o/c logo ;) good luck!

I'll try to run it at 1280 x 1024 and see how it goes. From what I hear people don't struggle with it nearly as much as with Doom 3 for decent fps.

Why 12 pipes? I have 16 enabled, is it because you have a laser cut non vivo?
veryhumid
11-16-04, 12:17 PM
that is a darn good question! I don't think Viper ever told me. I know he used a xt-pe bios because it gave him a better memory clock. I can't remember him telling me why he didn't unlock the extra pipes. I'll blast him an e-mail. Neb has proved even if it is laser cut, you can still make it work, correct?

Just curious but
Why 12 pipes? I have 16 enabled, is it because you have a laser cut non vivo?
a darn good question and Viper has the perfect answer:
With the exception of a very few first production run cards the 12 pipe "AA" core used on x800 Pro non VIVO can not be changed to 16 pipes through hardware mods and firmware changes alone. It will take modded driver as well to get around ATI's ASIC code lock.
ATI learned their lesson with the 9500 NP's that could be turned into 9700's really did the lock right this time around. A few of the first prod run x800Pro NV's got unlocked "AA" cores ( the trace was still cut though ) that were intended for engineering purposes and those could be changed to 16 pipe. They were very few, very far between and ancient history now. Your cards laser cut is bridged and the programming switch SMR's have been moved in the hope that modded drivers will show up. Unwinder (RivaTuner) was working on that as was W1zzard (ATItool) but they have both stopped. ATI put so many layers of protection in the drivers to prevent getting around the lock they both have tabled that project for now.
