View Full Version : 6800 Ultra + NV Silencer 5 = Trouble

I've finaly got some time to install the NV5 Silencer which came on Friday, BUT right away I saw the 1st big problem, they FORGOT TO INCLUDE ANOTHER faceplate (or whatever its called) for the ULTRA's!!!

Here's a picture of what I'm talking about:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v252/imageshost/Graphics/nofaceplate.jpg

This is unbelievable!!! How could they forget something like that for Ultra's?!?

Here's what I've had to do:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v252/imageshost/Graphics/Picture663.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v252/imageshost/Graphics/Picture664.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v252/imageshost/Graphics/Picture665.jpg

It's about 5mm away from the plate and temps go high! Otherwise the card is NOT fixed in the AGP slot :(

I've tried it w/out faceplates (or whatever the're called) and the results were pretty satisfying:

NO faceplate present:

Idle - 53c
Load - 58c

HERE's SCREENSHOT after I've ran 3DMark03. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v252/imageshost/Graphics/silencer_load.jpg)

And WITH faceplate present:

Idle - 57c
Load - 62c

HERE's ScreenShot also after I've ran 3DMark03 (STOCK faceplate on) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v252/imageshost/Graphics/faceon_silencer.jpg)

And I have just recently sold my dremel so I don't have the tools at the moment to cut the holes for the air to go trough :(, any Ideas? BTW I've sent an email to arctic-cooling, we'll see what they say.

you have a couple of options:
-you could drill out the 6800 faceplate to accomodate the air or,
-you could trim off the extra from the 6800 face plate and add the slotted one or,
-you could avoid modifying the original plate altogether and grab a plate from an older card and drill out the mounting holes to accomodate your 6800 and combine that with the slotted plate.
personally, i would just drill out the 6800 plate. Then again, i still have a dremel :p

EDIT: you could trim back the plastic portion at the exit area and "custom" route it to the next pci slot or someplace... (geez a THREE slot solution)

the hassle just aint worth it the evga copper cooler is so much simpler, the NV offers silence though and that is golden to me but not for the hassle you are going through

gl with it keep us posted

maybe you can find a plate from a GT that has dual DVI's... then you wouldn't have to modify the one you have. If you want, you can mail me your plate with the holes drawn on it and I'll cut them out...

just a thought

Yep, I thought about the first option you've mentioned right away, but I don't have the tools atm to do that, and I probably won't for the next couple months

Don't you think temps are good with it when faceplate is OFF?

Here's how I've tested btw:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v252/imageshost/Graphics/Picture662.jpg

And it's SUPER quiet now with it, and I'd like my computer to be quite, so alinosa's solution sounds interesting. I think I'll do that if he'll do a good job :d

Here's how I want to cut it:

But I need some time to think about it...

I have a Ultra and also had the same problem, the instructions for the cooler mention that you need to cut the plate, which i did, i used tin snips i bought from a local hardware store. The VGA cooler on my Ultra was nothing but a problem, the card kept locking up even though the temps were reading ok, i have had to go back to the stock cooler which is working fine no more lock ups, i wish i hadn't bothered, i cannot RMA my card now if anything goes wrong as the cut plate would give the game away :bang head

I really think they should have marketed it as "fits 6800 series, additional modification needed to fit Ultra"... cuz im sure they recieve calls from people trying to return the item for that..

Well people, have you ever considered buying a dremel tool? Or, you could use a drill (everyone better own one of these) and punch enough holes in the thing to allow air through.

I've had a dremel which I've had to sell. BUT that's not the main point of the topic. My main idea of the thread was: "If I pay $30 for a tool which indicates that IT IS compatible with 6800nu/GT/ULTRA, I want it to BE compatible!", and NO further modifications to be required for it to be working right!!!! This is just rediculous. Yes, temp results look ok to me, and yes, it is VERY quiet, but they were REQUIRED to add that accessory already with the hole in it if they say it IS compatible with 6800 Ultra!

Couldn't you just take a dummy face/back plate, and outline it with the faceplate you have for modification? That will not only save you the trouble of messing up your original plate for a RMA later, but it will also allow you to use the other face plate aswell. And from experience, those heatsinks have to fit pretty snug on the gpu to work well.

Good idea! Didn't come to my mad mind yet :D. Now just have to find unused ones...

Thanks for the support guys =)!

P.S. I can still RMA it after I do a physical change to it? I thought I can't do such thing? or Is it only for ATI's? lol Because I already "said bye" to its warranty after I've started replacing the fan.. thought its same as with ATI's..

I'm sure a dummy plate would be more worth on your video card, than just feeling in an empty pci slot?

Technically, any modification to the card voids the warranty. But the resale value of the card, would be better if you had the original hardware to sale with it.;)

I've been real busy and only answered to emails for my classified items.. .sorry for being away for long.

I'm happy with it for now because its VERY VERY QUIET, and I have AT LAST received an email from Arctic Cooling tech.support:

Actually I heard a lot of complain from customer who bought our product from NewEgg and they don't get the complete package.
Anyway we do supply our overseas distributors with spare parts and units for RMA issues.
Please contact your local supplier for a "VGA metal face plate" and a "6800 metal faceplate"

No, you don't have to RMA, and they answer quicker too, (less then a week to answer compared to over 2 weeks from AC), but it takes about 5 more days to mail the item. So to get the plate itself would take about 2 weeks in total.

And my message? Well I just told them the usual, i.e. what do I want from them, my order# and even gave them a picture of what I'm talking about :D.

Oh, and they don't E-mail free replacements, they simply Mail them ;).

Your supposed to leave the original bracket on the card and just use the vented one on the slot below your card to allow hot air out. There is no double bracket like the older Silencers because the weight is handled better with the current design. Also I have no idea what the "noise" issue is some of you are talking about, my card is the quietest thing in my computer. With a decent OC making heat for the NVSilencer5 to get ride of, I can feel the heat pouring out the back through the vented bracket, all handled nice and quiet ...

NewEgg is probably sending another single slot vent...LOL.

I have a gainward 6800 Ultra, 2 50mm whiny fans. It's the nosiest thing in my computer even with dynamic fan control on in the drivers. That is, the fan spins about 60% during 2D and 100% during 3D. Even at 60% they drive me nutz. NV5 from sidewindercomputers.com due in tomorrow.

I'm confused, are you saying that I should leave original Ultra Bracket on? But its a double one, so air won't go trough lol. What noise we're talking about??.. the one that ULTRA's fan makes when you go into 3D mode :).

Are you talking about Ultra or GT? lol

logrus, do you like your eVGA 6800 ultra, i mean does it OC well?

Is eVGA A good BRAND?

I have a bfg 6800 gt oc with a modded bios for higher 1.4 mem voltage and i still get crashes after a couple hours of CS SOURCE.
Also I have the NV silencer that i bought fron newegg w/out the vented face plate!

The speeds are 400/1100 .:bang head :temper:

a local store here has 6 eVGA 6800 ultras @ $549

g0dM@n
12-28-04, 11:38 PM
You've asked the right place. I had a BFG 6800 GT OC with an NV5 Silencer as well, but I JUST sold it on ebay last Thursday. I had it for about 2 months before selling it. Okay, you are crashing b/c it does NOT like 1.4volts. Dude, trust me on this... I spent HOURSSSSSS on that damn card. Do NOT use 1.4 volts. Does your video completely turn off, but the computer stays on? Why don't you look at the video card after your computer does that... you'll see that the fan on the video card (the Silencer's fan) is actually off when that happens.

I figured out (I think) that since the card cannot handle the 1.4 volts correctly it shuts itself down and the card completely turns off. This is why your computer stays on, but you lose video and claim that your computer crashed. Well, mine did it while I was looping Test 3 and/of Test 4 on 3dmark03. It would crash between 3-5 loops... that's it. I'll admit one thing, though... it did help the GPU clock higher without artifacts, but who wants a crashing video card?

Go back to the default 1.3volts, dude, and just overclock that way. I got mine rock stable at 393/1.14. I could have probably even gone higher on the memory, but that's what I hit. Also, the Silencer wasn't worth buying IMHO b/c the copper heatsink with dual fans wasn't so bad. All you really need is AC5 on the card and you could overclock with the stock copper heatsink... well, IF that's the one you do have.

Anyways, the eVGA 6800 Ultra is a SWEET ASS CARD bro. The thing is... it comes STOCK at 425/1100 instead of the regular 400/1100 like other Ultras. The reason why people buy the BFG 6800 Ultra OC in my opinion is b/c BFG advertises their cards as 'OC' (OverClocked). eVGA does not advertise like that some newbs don't know that they are getting the same crap. That is why people on EBAY bid over 500 bucks for the BFG Ultra, and less than 450 for the eVGA Ultra. Check out my sig... with stock cooling and AC5 I use it DAILY at 446/1.23 on CS Source (no crashing)... that is practically an ULTRA EXTREME. I didn't really gain anything with the Silencer, but when I get my replacement dual rear face plate I'll try again. With better cooling and 1.5 volts I can hit 470-480gpu and 1300-1350mem. I hit 1300 memory for about an hour before it artifacts (HAS to be a heat issue).

I bought my eVGA 6800 Ultra used on ebay with retail box for 400+20shipping. Go on ebay on you should find a brand new one for around that price. Sell your BFG on ebay if you're not happy with the 1.3 stock volts. I found an eVGA 6800 Ultra on ebay brand new for 400 + free shipping the day after I got mine in the mail =(

Let me know what you do and how you go about on that BFG, bro. Good luck!

Also I have the NV silencer that i bought fron newegg w/out the vented face plate!

By the way, I have the same problem, except that I need that plate for the Ultra. You don't need the dual face plate for the GTs... unless you are actually speaking of the little venting plate. You could just leave a PCI slot cover open... same sh|t practically.

<- this guy.
:D

the lower opening for the dvi looks wierd...

Yes, it does look wierd, but its only because it can be used with either Ultra or GT which has 1xVGA and 1xDVI outputs and VGA is wider which reflects on the plate you see in the picture ;).

Should fit just fine :).

And my old scores are from a 2.8ghz Intel rig, trashed WinXP and a hot video card since I've had Silencer with no vent holes on it @ that time :( (check out temps).

I just got my BFG 6800 Ultra today, I'm soooo excited. Its replacing a 9800 Pro that poofed out on me. I also ordered the new Zalman VF700-Cu cooler which should arrive on Monday with my new 21" monitor. I hope this cooler is the answer to the Ultra's lack of aftermarket cooling. Too bad it was 35 dollars + shipping :(

When you had the 6800 ultra did the nv silencer cool better than the stock HS?

If you want to sell ithe plate i will buy from you ?

What did you replace the 6800 ultra with?

It did, about 4-5c. Not by much, but at least that and it also quiets the thing down a whole lot better!

The plate goes to alinosa as he bought the card from me, and my Ultra is currently replaced with ATi 9800XT (see sig). Needed money to buy a fast laptop and currently looking at the ones build by ABS.

To Whom It May Concern:

I had e-mailed your company previously about the missing Rear Plate for my 6800 Ultra that I purchased from newegg.com. You guys sent me the part in a REGULAR PAPER ENVELOPE from Hong Kong and guess what… it was ripped open from the side. Please get back to me regarding this, for I want another one shipped out to me. This is not my problem, but yours, considering you sent a piece of metal in a paper envelope.

My info is:

I suggest you send it in a more SECURE manner. Please get back to me ASAP regarding the situation and how you will be dealing with it. Once again here is my receipt from newegg:

Wait, so you've gotten the plate, but wrote a letter to them again? (Yea, the envelope might've been ripped, but who cares!? the plate is the most important thing there is, and its not bent or anything! :p)

Or am I not getting something here? :D

Yeah, sry I didn't update you. I sent another email the next day saying that I forgot to mention that b/c the envelope was ripped that the plate was missing. That's what I meant by ripped envelope. It was just an empty envelope, lol.

Oh wow, I'm sorry. My envelope was ripped as well as you can see from the pix. But USPS wrapped it up another envelope and some tape. So I've succesfully got the plate.

Did they say that they'll send you another one already? Also if it was the original email to him I think you should mention that the plate was MISSING, because I for one didn't get that it was missing ..

They already said that they are resending. In all honesty, F their company b/c I've had my silencer for about 3 months sitting in my closet. Who the hell wants to buy a product that you have to wait 3+ months to use? Also, who is stupid enough to send a metal plate in a paper container (a.k.a. paper envelope)? I just think they are stupid.
