I want to do a custom case and I'm not looking for anything that'll render huge 3d images, I just want something where I can build a nice wire-frame 3D image of my idea so I can visualize it.

At this point it doesn't need to be to scale, I don't need exact representation of all the components (a simple box for the PSU, etc) would suffice.

I am familiar with Photoshop and paintshop but I don't need something that complex. And again, preferably it has to be freeware.

I've searched and people reccomended 3D Max, and autocad but I don't want to pay for something like that that I'll proabably use once.

Any reccomendations?

Well i'm not expert in the 3D field, however i use 3D Max a bit at college and i love it. However as you said it costs. However if you go over to http://www4.discreet.com/gmax/ You'll find Gmax which is basically a cut down free version of 3D Studio Max, i use it for modeling games however you could use it for this

I like using a little free animation tool called anim8or ( www.anim8or.com ) Not only can you model stuff but if you every plan on having moving parts in your mods you can animate them. Anim8or is pretty simple, we teach it to the middle school kids at the school where I work, but it is powerful enough to do quite a bit.
