yeah, reminds me of the kid who stole a lotto ticket, only to be a winner of like 150,000.. but he 1, stole it and 2, wasnt 18... so the state got the money and he got charged with theft when he tried to claim it.... lol

That is sooooooo, much money to spend on stuff, only at best buy. Well, I guess I could spend most of it on folding rigs, 2 plasma tvs and 3 lcd monitors and more hdd's for my bro and I.

Shoeby
11-16-04, 07:40 PM
Yeah I'd definately get a plasma tv, and a monsterous home theatre system.

Its definately to rate customers, on their buying habits.

man_utd
11-16-04, 08:13 PM
If I win, I might as well buy a 12k tv to see what Ed has to say about it. With 30000 dollars, I welcome all irritating best buy sales people to help me waste money.

Robrules18
11-16-04, 08:16 PM
i could blow 15k on a hometheater easy. Then another thousand on DVDs and CDs. and the rest would go straight to a few large expensive items that i would sell on ebay and then spend on computer parts from real computer stores. And now that I have the plan on what to do with the money worked out I can enter. Because obviously since I have my plan layed out I have to win.

11-16-04, 09:01 PM
Would you have to spend it all right away? I'd wait for the dollar to go up twice its value. :D

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0184858/plotsummary
Tagline: The trap is set. The game is on. "

Only thing is that bestbuy is looking to pull off the big one...the big data mining uh contest that will let them live off forever :sn: instead of a bank.

Personally I think there is no chance for me, I've never done anything "bad" like try to send in rebates then return the item or overclock and return or anything like that. Also the Mcdonalds bestbuy bucks seems to make bestbuy REALLY happy...yes, I'm being sarcastic. I hunt for the best prices and that pretty much makes up my buying habit at bestbuy. Otherwise I'm going to buy from newegg or some other place. Personally I think the whole labling people as devils and unwanteds could easily backfire. Take kids that just dont have the money to buy massive amounts of stuff being treated like trash then talking to their parents...then friends and ofcoarse parents of friends etc.

11-17-04, 05:08 AM
If i win this, i'd prolly spend $5000 on a frigginly awesome computer, maybe just buy the best parts (harddrives, gfx cards), and i would sell the rest of the $25000 to someone for $24000 in real money (or split it up and sell it for multiple people, each $1000 only $950)

Maybe ill make it a "cyber deal" offer where i sell bestbuy bucks for real money lol....

Sk8erfreak986
11-17-04, 05:39 AM
What's this about annoying best buy staff? I work for best buy....Trust me your probably more annoying to me when your walking around the store asking questions...Were supposed to ask you if you need help and if you say no we leave you alone...we don't work on commision were not vultures

I would buy iPod 40 gb, 42 inch plasma..some BOSS home theather system (3k)hmm..and X800 pro, and a gig of greatest ram they have (I am guessing Kingston HyperX PC4k) and Antec True 480 :D

heh i'm in..even tho i'm close to 18...

Sk8erfreak986

11-17-04, 08:26 AM
Watch out guys..they might make you pay 10k tax like that ballistix dude did..:D

You will have to pay prize taxes on this. Depending on your state its going to cost you at least $8k federal and likely $3-4k more local.

bounty29
11-17-04, 11:07 AM
Man... if I won I'd have to sell like $15,000 worht of stuff for however much the taxes cost, I have no way to pay those off.

depthad
11-17-04, 03:33 PM
well... the way i calculated it and taking into account how many people might register mr catillion was way off... i got a 1 to 1 chance of winning... yup im going to win it.

11-17-04, 04:24 PM
I would first buy Tons of PC crap, Tvs blow all the money then sell it all on ebay but a few things. TO pay back taxs.

Best buy should have to pay the taxes....kinda sucks, you WIN $30k to spend at best buy, but you need to pay 10k out of ur pocket...

I mean you could sell stuff, but selling 10k worth of stuff mind be kinda hard...go on ebay and sell a 5k tv w/ NO past sales! lol

I'd still love to win, don't get me wrong :)

Kenshiro
11-17-04, 05:24 PM
rule of thumb..... just take around 35 - 40 % in tax. This also has to depend on your annual earnings. If you are a college student and pays for yoru own tuition, tax should be lower.

One more thing. don't forget the sales tax.

tenchi86
11-17-04, 10:23 PM
So the money can be spent at the bestbuy website correct. The website dosnt have sales tax does it?

Mortis03

No but it would have gift tax and like property tax... the winner will prolly only take home like 15k worth of stuff  :D

Sk8erfreak986
11-18-04, 05:26 AM
no the winner would take home 30k worth of stuff...because its best buy bucks..not cash...they would be stuck with paying the additional income taxes because you have to claim it as income

The gift tax will either come out directly when they give you the prize, or you will have to report it during tax day. This will totally depend on how best buy want to handle it. As for sales tax, as long as there is a best buy store in your state, you will definitely have to pay that even if you are buying thru the website.

11-19-04, 09:35 AM
I do hope that they take the tax directly out of the $30000, and give the winner the net price. Otherwise, it's cash out of the pocket for the winner. If the winner can't pay the tax, its hellooooo IRS pounding on your door.

Personally, I will reject the prize if I have to pay the tax later myself. I don't have $10000 cash to give to the IRS.

do you realize how hard it would actually be to sell that many ipods at a decent price? talk about over supply, then you get raped by ebay fees and paypal fees

tenchi86
11-19-04, 09:01 PM
Yes it truely sucks I mean you have $30000 yet with tax of say 8k you cant sell the 30k to pay for the 8k. I mea you might be bale to but it would be much easier to just say give me 5k and keep the rest.

11-20-04, 04:43 AM
All you guys mentioned electonics and all but....

I would get myself one big ass fridge i saw at BB with a TV built into the door  I'll get that for my room.

I got this out of the official rules its on the green bar twords the bottom of the contest entry page

All orders MUST be placed by the Representative to be counted toward the prize balance. Orders placed by Winner directly on the BestBuy.com Web site are solely the responsibility of the Winner and will not be counted toward the prize balance or considered part of the prize. Merchandise ordered will be billed directly to BestBuy.com, and the total of each transaction, including shipping, handling, and any sales tax, will be deducted from the $30,000 total prize value. Representative will maintain a record and total of all transactions, which will be considered the official total of the prize value balance, and will be sent to Winner upon request. If Winner chooses to order merchandise in excess of the balance as tabulated by Representative, then he/she will be responsible for the excess amount, and any taxes associated with that amount. The prize value balance may only be used for the purchase of any merchandise offered on BestBuy.com; cannot be applied to prior purchases at BestBuy.com; cannot be used at Best Buy retail locations; cannot be applied toward a Best Buy Credit Card account; and further restrictions may apply. Winner will need to comply with all communication and security protocols as directed by Sponsor when communicating with the Representative. The entire $30,000 prize value balance must be redeemed by June 30, 2005. Any unused portion of prize as of the expiration date will be forfeited and will not be awarded. Winner may not substitute, assign, or transfer prizes, or redeem prizes for cash, but Sponsor reserves the right to substitute prize with a prize of equal or

You mean the sales or gift tax???? As long as there is a BB store in your state, you will be subjected to sales tax. As for the gift tax, I think it is definitely there. Base on Stabob's information, the winner MUST place the order thru a representative of the BB. I think this is a way for BB to track how much prize was given away, and they can file it with their tax. Otherwise, they will just mail the winner a $30000 gift card.

did you not read the quote?

It will be invoiced to BB, so they pay it. Even if tehy didnt want to, they are getting the invoice, so either way your legally safe from it. (THEY are buying it, and handing it to you.)

Kenshiro

I'm not too sure about that. It may look that way, but I seriously doubt it's tax free. I just think it is a way for them to track how much "money" they gave away, so it can be report in their tax return. And they know exactly who and where they ship their item to.

It's useless for us to argue about this. the best way is for the winner to check with Best Buy and find out.

tenchi86
11-22-04, 09:04 PM
I believe BB pays the tax for each item you buy. Like the what is it now 6 1/2 cnets now. I believe the tax for winning is still yours to pay.

Dippy posted a quote from Bestbuy indicating that all merchandise will invoice thru a representative of bestbuy, and all charges includes shipping, handling, and sales tax will be deducted directly from the $30000 prize. As long as there is a Bestbuy in your state, you will have to pay for sales tax indefinitely.

Of course we were just wondering about that gift tax. I will have to agree with you. From the way Bestbuy presents this prize, it does look like the gift tax is paid when the winner files for their tax on April 15th.

first of all, indefinitely means forever.

second, from that quote one would assume that thered be sales tax no matter what state. since the best buy representative is gonna be in a state with a best buy.
