i get 10fps in 1024 x 768 and lowest quality everything. also i get about 5fps with 1280 x 1024 and high everything. if there any way i can get above 30fps with 1280 x 1024 and high quality? for those cards under $50? or would it be like around 20fps?

The Radeon 8500 is at least 5x faster than an MX400 in low detail, it probably pulls farther ahead in high. The 9100 is the same as an 8500, the 9000/9200 is a slightly slower 8500 and the Ti4200 is faster, but usualy more expensive, that any card listed there.

The Ti4200 should be right around the $50 mark and play just about everything out fairly well although it will only do DX8.

You wont find anything at that pricerange that can do DX 9 well. Anything available retail at that price will be crippled. There is a 9600se around that, but it has a very poor memory interface and would run newergames like a slide show. The reason the Ti4200 is still viable is because it uses an easier path. The dx 8 isnt all that bad. I use a 5800 at work that uses dx 8 on half life 2 and it isnt as bad as people would think.

I don't think you will find a good dx9 card for under $50, unless you find somebody really desperate to sell a used one. dx9 is not worth the hit in performance of the crippled cards. Go for one of the older generation cards mentioned above.

First of all, what is the rest of your computer like? My buddy has a Celeron 900 with 384 mb of ddr (yes ddr based mobo) and he pulls in 25fps in low detail with a 64mb MX400. So tell us the details of the rest of your system because you may be better served to spend that $50 in another area first.
