View Full Version : Poll: Whats the best 2-2-2-5 PC3200 RAM?

Streifenkarl
11-18-04, 04:10 PM
I'd be cool if there would be a poll for this. Kingston, Corsair, OCZ, Crucial, GEIL, Mushkin, PQI and so on all offer this new stuff which easily makes us forget the days of BH-5. I'd like too see how foum users here rate these sticks from their own opinions! I know, there will be more companies offering this kind of memory in the future, and DDR is at the end of its time, but nevertheless... i want a poll! Pleeeease...

The ones i know:

GEIL Ultra-X 3200
OCZ PC3200 Platinum Rev. 2
PQI Turbo Series
Kingston KHX3200ULK
Corsair XMS 3200XL
Mushkin Level II V.2
Crucial BallistiX 3200
G.Skill TCCD 3200

So, if the mods here wont turn this into a real poll: Which one (if you have 2-2-2-5 3200 RAM) do you have and are you satisfied with its performance?

OCZ hands down

El<(')>Maxi
11-18-04, 05:13 PM
Depends on if you want it to run 2-2-2-5/6 past PC3200 speed. In that case the Mushkin wins hands down. None of TCCD stuff can do those timings to anywhere near the speed of BH-5....yet.

I just grabbed some of the Geil, I'll let you guys know how it does soon.

Here's someone else's Geil Ultra-X on A64, probably 2t

i have geil and its cheap stuff that performs well much like pqi. the only thing i dont like about geil is they are voltage hogs i had to run it at 2.7v just for 200fsb at 2-2-3-11 and it is pc3200 2-3-3-6 but they warranty up to 3 volts and encorage overclocking. the other company i seen do this was OCZ.

El<(')>Maxi
11-18-04, 05:31 PM
The Ultra-X isn't cheap @ $275, but it's not the most expensive either. Some of the new OCZ TCCD is over $350 for a gig.

11-18-04, 05:34 PM
ohhhh pffft :p all this stuff uses TCCD, so YOCMV... Just like BH-5. And honestly, this stuff just hasn't been out long enough to determine which brand seems to clock the highest.

El<(')>Maxi
11-18-04, 05:39 PM
OCZ claims to speed bin or whatever for their faster/higher priced TCCD, and we know pretty confidently that the Brain Power pcb'd is better. OCZ is talking about some voltage loving TCCD now too that they will release. Wonder how much it will cost;)

This GSkill stuff looks good too, PC4400 2.5-3-3-7 (Also rated for 2-2-2-5 PC3200) from kakaroto @ XR

You should read some of those reviews you posted Kav, they do not come close to the supposed results you claim.

From this one http://www.steamedturtle.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=67

"Disappointing overclocking results"

And this one http://www.viperlair.com/reviews/memory/other/mushkin/DDR1/ll3200/index.shtml

"Dropping to 3-4-4-8 timings the highest I could reach was 235"

And this http://www.3dgameman.com/vr/mushkin/pc3200/video_review_03.html

vid review(sucks), best was 220mhz 2-2-2-5 and 255 @ 3-4-4-8

And here http://motherboards.org/reviews/hardware/1459_1.html

"250HTT 2.5-3-3-6 1T"

Show me your bench's and I might try and believe you. And btw, on Intel platforms the memory speed will be higher than A64, esp in dual channel 939. And A64 needs to be all @ 1t, we don't care about 2t very much.

*EDIT

Ah just noticed, you need some quotes there man:D I thought the way you posted that at first it was your review.

Anyway, good luck with the Mushkin. I love my LII

the bext memory, i think, is dependent on what cpu you have. for example my ballistix are better served being in an a64 or P4 than in my xp-m 2400 (i found this out after my ballistix purchase)

my timings should be 2-2-2-5, but my system will only run them @ 2.5 cas

i can run @ 2.5-2-2-5, however, my sisandra scores are higher @ 2.5-2-2-11 (which apparently is not unusual for the xp-m chips)

Head over to OCZ's website, they have good info on that site.

The DDR Booster from OCZ is not compatible with the A8V according to OCZ but it can be made to fit and work with a few simple mods.
Look here:-
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=38564&highlight=A8V

Otherwise ,you are stuck with 2.8V like I am, unless you volt mod.

And why's that? OCZ had a bad rep because of their customer service long ago from what I hear. New management has totally turned around the company though. No other RAM manufacturer is as involved in the overclocking community as OCZ is.

Got my Crucial BallistiX 3200 today, and they simply rock! They do everything i expected and the AnandTech 2-2-2 memory article promised! 2.5-2-2-5 timings @ 466MHz and of course 2-2-2-5 @ stock speeds. I did have to raise the memory voltage to 2.9v though in order to get a 100% stable result.

The 2x512MB cost me 252USD plus the VAT in germany and shipping which added up to 255 € (332USD). Comparable stuff from Kingston, Corsair or GEIL would have been around 270€ so i guess i got a good deal. Either way, this memory is awesome. :D

I've got G-Skill TCCD, PC3200 2.0-2-2-5-1T or PC4400 2.5-3-3-7-1T.
Streifen, in your case I'd look for some A-data TCCD (PC4500, look at cheeep.de, they've got it for 109€)

Very satisfied with the modules, they keep their 2-2-2 up to 223MHz, which is the maximum of my board- 2.63V :)

I was considering getting a couple 512 MB DIMM's using Samsung K4H560838F-TCCD modules or the like and I don't know if any brands are significantly better when it comes to boards and assembly but PQI for $250 shipped looked relatively good compared to some of the "specialty" brands. But then Crucial can be had for the same. Then I saw PDP for $225 and their slightly slower LLK for $190. Finally, I stumbled upon Kingston for $222 after rebate from zipzoomfly (untill 12/6) so if I do pull the trigger there really isn't any question.

Which memory does have Brainpower PCBs and which doesnt?

Somebody should do a sticky on which TCCD based modules use the
Brainpower PCB.

Here's my contribution:

There are 2 types of BrainPower PCBs :

1] B6U808
2] B6U815

Here's a review that highlights the differences between the PCB:

So far it's not 100% conclusive which OC better however many agree the 808 are superior.

Thanks for the heads-up. I have since read the articles comparing the same IC's on BP versus JEDEC reference PCB's and it does seem PDP is the best value (so long as they are in business as long as Kingston to honor the lifetime warrantee). chiefvalue is flogging the PDP for a few rupees less than newegg.

Lol oh yeah, same here! It took me ages to finally decide which one i want.

I had

2x512 Infineon CL2.5 (2.5-3-3-6) @ 2.65v
2x256 Kingston HyperX PC4000 CL3 (3-4-4-8) @ 2.7v

2x256 Mushkin Level II BH-5 (2-2-2-5 @ 2.8)

2x512 Crucial BallistiX PC3200 (2-2-2-5 @ 2.65v)

And all that in the past 12 months. The Crucial i have now seems to be the perfect choice and i will keep them until i upgrade to a new socket. But as you can see, it took me several tries to find the right stuff... and i wasted some money in the process. Ah well, im all set now!
