After reading several articles @ overclockers.com and other likeminded sites, i recently upgraded my 800Mhz Duron for a 1.4Ghz Athlon:D After installing the little beast i noticed that the via hardware monitor showed an incease of 10*C (41*C) over my previous Duron chip. This had me worried as i had read a lot of posts refering to the high levels of heat given off by the new 1.4's. Anyway after reading a few more of posts on how to deal with such problems and by making a few modifications, like purchasing an Akasa Silver Mountain HSF (very nice!), adding a 92mm side fan to the case and installing a funky little cooling utility VCool http://www.naggelgames.de/vcool/VCool.html I am now have the following success story:

AMD Athlon T-Bird 1.4Ghz@1.61Ghz
Clock = 12x
FSB = 134Mhz
Vcore = 1.85v
cpu idle temp = 25*C cpu max temp = 32*C

Just to say thanks for all the helpfull tips. MDA:D

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS. Nice O/C MDA. Hows about some picks of Sandra2001 Benchmarks for all of us to see your accomplishment? Nice really Nice O/C:cool: :cool: :cool:

Akasa on tbird 1.4@1.61
cpu idle temp = 25*C cpu max temp = 32*C
It too good to be true (just consider the C/W of the silver mountain with these reported numbers and bye bye swiffy and watercool...)
I think you should have a plain 10° more if not more. Check your probe, try to see if it can touch the cpu if you bend it a little

With a cpu temp of 25 idle I'd guess you have ambient temps of around 20 then - and the KT7 series are known to read a little low, so the actual full load temp is probably around 35-37C. Taking ambient as 20 and full load as 37 then that's a 17C rise - and a Tbird at 1610 and 1.85V puts out 91.7W of heat, so that's a C/W of 0.19 - probbaly a little optimistic. Unless you have really low ambient temps, the cpu temp is probably about 39-40C, which would go with a C/W of about 0.21 or 0.22 - much more realistic. Still damn nice cooling, and a great oc! Have you tried pushing it any further?

Thanks for the welcome:) Just to add, that when i first mounted the new Athlon without any mods to my case i was getting temp readings of about 40*C idle and 51*C max load. I know have 3 case fans (thanks Abit!) 1-80mm intake @ the front, 1-92mm intake on the side mounted right above the Akasa HSF and 1-80mm outake @ the rear all are mounted using dampning to keep the noise down.

I havn't remounted the cpu scince installing it, so without the mods i guess i was getting what seems like true results from the temp probe, so i have no grounds for thinking the ones im getting now aren't true.

As for ambient temp, its about 24*C where i live!

I dont know what the general feeling is when using HLT cooloing progs, but Vcool, which is disigned spercifically for Via chipsets seems to give the best results for me. a drop of about 7*C overall!!

I dont actually know how to take an image copy from sisoft, so if someone could let us know how, it would be apreciated:)

In the meantime here's a snapshot from Wcpuid, showing how things are running.

Just press Print Screen when you have the Sandra windows up, then go into MS Paint or whatever and select Edit ---> Paste, or press Ctrl+V. Then save as whatever format you want (probably have to be .bmp with Paint). Here's one I've just done (used irfanview to convert it to .gif).

Rob!

Can't seem to find the 'Print Screen' option, is it in sisoft or is part of windows os, or am i supposed to use the paint package to capture the image?

The print screen option is on the keyboard and usually found just above insert or next to the function keys

Hmmm Sounds like wpcredit and wpcrest.These programs allow a regestry change for idle temps,as well as other chipset tweaks.

I am curious if the program you talk about can really hold full load down that much and still allow for max processor performance.Do me a favor and run Prime 95 for at least an hour, if all you did is add software I am willing to bet MAX load temps will be exactly what thay were before that software was installed.

I say this because at full load that processor will generate up to 91 watts of heat and unless that software is holding the processor back from max usage your cooling then depends COMPLETLY on the hardware,,, ie Heat Sink And case fans.

Please post results with a screen shot including the prime 95 window,,And the Via HArdware Moniter....

Actaully there is a much better grabbing tool that saves a while lot of time, it's called GrabIt and it allows you to grab certain objects on the screen instead of doing a complete screen dump and then cuting out what you need, it will let you highlight the window you want and then with a click you capture.

by the way the multimedia benchamrk doesn't really many anything, its kinda useless, the only important ones are CPU, Memory and Drives.

Yeah, I just like it cos the numbers are bigger :)

You can also hit ALT+print screen button and it will copy only the highlighted screen
