View Full Version : 9800 Pro or 6600gt?
I am deciding between a 256mb/bit 9800 Pro and a 128mb/bit 6600gt. I have seen reviews that show trhe 6600gt killing the 128mb version fo the 9800 pro but i have not seen any against the 9800 pro 256mb/bit. I was wondering which was the better card to get and why? thx

Good news, the XFX 6600GT is now more affordable @ newegg. Down to 225 from 245 :)
6600gt beats 9800 pro and has better or similar pefromance to 6800, even if 9800 has 256mb it wont make huge difference in performance vs 128

I disagree with that. If you have a 256mb 9800PRO, then to go from it to a 6600 will not be great (especially if the 9800 is doing 9800xt speeds). You should look into the 6800 if a 256mb 9800PRO is what you have, I would rather have 256mb memory on video card than 128mb for newer games. Doom 3 and Farcry show the need for larger memory cards, and there's more to follow.
EDIT
Someone just posted this, and it seems as if the 9800xt is kicking butt. So that really puts my theory into perspective, and puts the 9800xt in a good class for DX9 gaming.

yeah....also in real world test my system is running better then a friends system with a 6800nu vs my 128meg 256bit 9800pro......he does have a much lower fsb....I currently lost my case and have to run the fan ultra low and my oc is only at 220x10.....anywho it runs EQ2 much better then his system.....so I feel that if you have a 9800pro or XT you should wait to get a 6800GT Ultra or x800pro XT.....just my 2 cents :)
I had a 9800xt and 6800NU and the NU appeared to kick the snot out of the 9800. I have said before, it basicly did everything the 9800 did but 1 res and/or 1 setting higher. I am sure IQ was better on the 9800 or so I have repetedly heard.

Nandro...Was this a 6800nu stock or with 16pipes and 6shaders?....also how does that GT in your sig compare?....thanks

Hmm...everything in the Hardocp preview points to the 6800GT spanking the 9800's... http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=Njg5LDM=
And in their review of HL2 the ATI hardware is slightly slower than the nvidia parts! GASP
The 6800NU I had was stick, overclocked to close to 400 and 890 on mem I believe. I sold it to logrus on these forums. PM him if you want to ask him anything. The GT in my sig does everything the NU does just usually 1 res higher and 1 setting up from it. Basicly 2 settings up from the 9800xt. Overall the NU was just overall smoother than the 9800xt. I was impressed with it especially being 128M card. I never noticed any IQ differences untill people started selecting single frames and highlighting parts and zooming in and such. The big game at the time was farcry and it made the difference between 1280x1024 on the NU and 1024x768 on the 9800xt while the NU could do high and ultra high and the 9800xt could do high at best with some lag. I never used fraps as I sold my 9800xt to a co worker shortly after getting the NU and GT. Originally I was going to sell the GT and keep the NU, but I got super clocks out of the GT and sold the NU and got a 5800NU as a backup because I ripped a ramsink off my trusty 9700pro :( Now if you want to see a difference in IQ the 9700 to the 5800 is amazing, Someone should kick NV in the nads for even selling that thing.

Another 9700pro bites the dust too eh? :eh?:
Yea, ripping off that ram chip was very depressing. 1. Because I got the card at such a good deal ($99 shipped off ebay almost a year ago) and 2. because my only card other than that was a co workers 5800NU. Dont get me wrong, the 5800 isnt bad, but the IQ compared to the 9700 was horrible. It has raw speed but throw any AA or AF and I may as well have a Ti4200.
