View Full Version : Northwood 1.6 doesn't want to overclock?

I'm putting a system together from some used parts:
P4 Northwood 1.6 (512KB L2)
Asus P4B
512MB PC133

Now at 1.6 GHz and default Vcore, everything runs smoothly, the memory will even do 133 at 2-2-2-5. When I bump it up to 1.92 GHz (30 MHz PCI, 60 MHz AGP), and set the memory to 1:1, I will get errors in Memtest within a few seconds. Bumping up Vcore to about 1.7V doesn't help. Could it be my cooling? I'm only using a stock Intel HSF, but the CPU temperature stays below 50°C.

it sounds more like your motherboard or ram then your processor, if you are getting errors using memtest

Agreed. Most people use memtest to test for memory errors. At 1.92 Ghz 1:1, your ram is at 160 Mhz and that might be asking too much.

Definitely the RAM.
PC133.....that's SDRAM, right?

Try either:
increase the RAM timings to cas 3 (for all).
Or:
Increase I/O voltage to 3.5v.

When I'm running at stock 100 MHz FSB, I can set the memory to 3:4, which will make it run at 133 MHz. But when I try for 120 MHz FSB or higher, I set the memory to 1:1. So I know the memory can handle 133 or less, and the PCI devices are ok at 30 MHz.
