less than $700. best value, least headaches surfing machine for wife and kids?
I see 4 contenders, Toshiba,HP,Compaq and Dell. Thoughts, opinions welcomed :eh?:
From what I have seen and heard:
- My friend has a 3.0GHz P4 laptop and loves it. Only problem is the top row of keys touch the screen when the laptop is closed. He gets around 1.5 to 2 hours battery life depending on what he uses it for.
- I have an Acer Aspire 1353XC laptop and its a year old. It has been fantastic and I would recomend Acer. I will be buying another Acer laptop when I replace it. 1 to 1.5 hours battery life for light-medium usage such as surfing the internet and producing spreadsheets and word processing and playing music.
- I also know someone who has a Toshiba Satellite laptop - I know the battery life is around 3 hours or so with light-medium usage or up to 6 hours on the lowest power setting (or so he says).

I'm not a great fan of Celerons myself, although I suppose it depends how important speed is to you.

Is that really necessary?
Similar spec Dell for 599.0
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=i1000R1&s=dhs
Thats all I could find in that price range - I looked at newegg.com and ebuyer.com
Is that really necessary?
If it wasn't, it wouldn't be there :p
It is to prevent new people from offering products without having to visit the forums. You can usually judge about someones integrity and trustability from the quality and frequency of his posts. If there wouldn't be such a minimum, it would be very hard to check out such a person.
Is that really necessary?

This may help a little to explain why. Its nothing personal against you ;) just in place to keep the classifieds safe.

I understand. My apologies for the blatant rule violation.

Its Ok, it wasn't really blatant as you didn't know - as I said, nothing personal, just a rule we have :) Welcome to the forums :).

First let me just say, I don't bother with anything "used". I gave that up 10-15 yrs.ago. Dave, yeah I've been watching the Dell deals but hisitant due to manufacturing quality concerns. I think I'm going to give Toshiba a shot, I remember doing upgrades and repairs on a friends' HP/Compaq :bang head I had always built my own starting with "Asus boards" so I have come to appreciate quality and peace of mind (never had a lick of problems with any of my systems) but now due to cost concerns I'm forced to buy a premanufactured unit and I guess Toshiba is the least of 2 evils plus it will only be for surfing and light stuff anyways. My current rig is for video crunching.

Not the best I have seen or had, but it does an excellent job for the $$. If you want go to dell outlet and get returns for much less. Saw some Inspiron 1150 with the usual specs (celery 2.2, 30 gig hd, ect. for $490 a few times.
