View Full Version : Looking For Single 512MB Stick for OCing Advice
Well I got my new A64 3000+ and DFI LAN UT nF3 250GB but I think my one stick of PC-2100 is bottlenecking the system and just making it feel slower than it should after upgrading from a 1700+. So I'm in the market for a single stick of PC-3200 for overclocking. My current choice is OCZ Enhanced Latency Platinum Edition.

Any better choices or reasons not to go with this RAM?

The memory you have in mind is a good choice, but I'd rather buy the PC4000-version of the same series - OCZ Gold Enhanced Latency rev. 2. They're rated at 2.5, 3, 3, 8 @ DDR500, which is really great. These modules will probably give a better HTT overclock while still performing well at 400MHz.

yes my friend get something with tccd chips. the lanparty frequently runs to 300mhz+ in single channel with a module of these chips. it will make ur eyes pop outta ur head... here is a list of companies that make this stuff..
1. ocz platinum pc3200 rev3.
2. pqi pc3200 2.2.2.5 turbo memory
3. gskill pc 4800
4. komusa pc4800 hyperram(they have it listed as pc5000) - expensive
there are others, but this will get u going...
Ok I'm more confused now.
Will PC-4000 run on a board that supports only up to PC-3200 speed?
If it would run, I'm guessing it would down clock to 3200 speeds which would then let me have the ability to up the mhz speeds to 4000 if I ever needed to? Also once again, if it would work, would I possibly be able to lower the timings due to it down clocking?
I am a little hesitant to buy my first ever "performance" RAM from someone other than OCZ. Their lifetime warranty, community interaction and atleast being one of the best high end RAM makers is a little hard to beat.

So now, which one would be best with my DFI and 3000+?
Also, I know the Rev 2 is one of the best overclockers out there about what about the non-Rev 2 that I am considering? How does it compare? Is there anywhere you can get single 512MB sticks of Rev 2?
Also, what about the OCZ EL GOLD VX?

Anyone? I posted a similar topic on xtremesystems.org and only got 1 reply with someone who had pretty much the same question. :(

I think OCZ PC-4000 EL Gold Rev 2 PC-4000 would be the better choice, cause they are probably a bit more versatile. AFAIK, the OCZ EL GOLD VX rocks, but they'll require alot of vDIMM (preferably up to 3,4). IMO it's best to have memory that's specified for high clock speed, as you get more headroom for overclocking.
PC4000 will run just fine no matter if the mobo-specs are only up to PC3200. What speed / timings the memory will run depends on the BIOS-settings (CPU-speed, divider, timings), and not the RAM's ratings. And yes, when running high bandwidth RAM (eg DDR500) underclocked, it'll usually enable you to tighten the timings quite significantly. My modules, for example, are rated 2.5, 4, 4, 7 @ 500 MHz, but they run stable @ 2.0, 2, 2, 6 @ 420.
