View Full Version : Voltage Help
Hello, i'm running a PIII866 on an Asus cuv4x modo and i wanted to know how high i should be able to put the voltage without damaging anyhting. it was defaut at 1.7, and i recently moved it up to 1.8 after i raised the fsb (it wouldnt boot up past 900mhz without upping the voltage). im now at 949 stable (961 crashed when the cpu was under load), so would it be safe to bump it up to 1.9v? my other system stats are as follows:
512 pc133 sdram
sound blaster live! value
ati rage Fury Pro/Xpert 2000
30gig generic hd
16x dvd rom
12x10x32 cdrw
i was also wondering how case cooling (fans and such) would affect overclocking. would they additional case fans affect cpu temperature or only the temps of other internal parts?
thanks for any help!

First off welcome to the forums.
I wouldnt go over 1.9v. you might be ok at 2.0v if you have good cooling but after .3v over default is putting the chip in risk
thanks for the welcome :)
so you're saying that 1.9 should be safe to do. after i install case fans (im putting in 2 80mm intake and 2 80mm exhaust + 2 bay coolers), will that allow me to bump up the voltage or would it have no effect on the cpu temp?

case ventilation normally helps a lot.....but carefully plan it out....alot of people just stick in 10 fans in random places expecting it to help.....

1.9 would only be safe if your CPU temps are cool enough, if your full load temps are over 40C then i would not raise my CV. If you have a good HSF and your temps are low then 1.9 would be just fine. Good case cooling is important as if your case temps are high your CPU will run hot also, the cooler your case temps are the cooler your CPU will run. one note besides using a good HSF you should use a good thermal compound in between your CPU and HSF.
i've done a lot of research and planning on case modding so i know where to put the fans to get the most out of them. guess i'll wait until they're in place to up the voltage. thanks for all your replies!
