It's time to throw away my old ISA modem and time to get another. I'm mainly looking for an external one, and I can't find any good and recent reviews on any. V.92 support is a possibility if I can find out if AOL supports it. So far, anything can do better than my 36/14 connection

I use an Ambien modem, manufactured by Intel I believe, very nice modem. I think Best Buy sells them for about $35, and thank god they're NOT winmodems :).
PCI or ISA are fine as long as the controller is on-board.
3com has a nice PCI hardware modem, but it was about $85 last I saw. As far as external modems, I'd go with a Microcom, who was bought out by Compaq, which would now be HP :D Hmm, I cant find the modems anymore, scratch that idea
Any of the USR/3com external desktop sportsters seem to be troublefree and they've been around forever. Best Buy for those.

If your looking for a good External modem the US robotics 56k sportsters are good. And if i were to buy one i would buy a used one probably off of Ebay also Zoom externals are good and i would try to find one that plugs into your COM port if your an overclocker some externals are usb.
USR Sportsters for external modem. I've set up a few of them and had no problems.

I'm just amazed to find a senior member using a modem. I have had cable for almost the whole time I have had a PC at home and going to somewhere that I have to use 56k feels like stepping back to first grade using a Texas Instruments running BASIC.

I use mine for a backup.
Cable modem isn't available everywhere, so some are forced to use dialup still (his username's got 'cow' mentioned in it, he may not be near a city ;)).

Yes, I'm going to go cry now :( I still need to ask my dad about getting Cable or DSL, but i'm not sure if I really need it. It also means having to get a network up so my sister doesn't complain all the time

No, @Home is available here, but I'd much rather have RoadRunner which isn't available yet(Faster uploads, about the same price) I'm also considering ADSL. There's a 1500/384 plan availabe, but from the reviews on dslreports.com, they rarely actually hit those speeds

I have Roadrunner and love it.
Almost everyone I know that has tried DSL has had awful problems with it. Most of them couldn't even get it working at all.
This could be because we have very poor phone srvice in this area.
