This is really weird. My computer has been acting up on me the last couple of days, so as part of trying to figure out what was wrong, I removed my heatsink to re-seat it, thinking it may be put on off center and overheating. Lo and behold, a sizable portion of the bottom right corner of my Durons core is missing entirely (completely shattered). After taking it out, reapplying heatsink compound and reseating the heatsink, it is still working. I'm using it at this moment. Is this entirely unheard of, or am i just an amazingly lucky person (I can't be too lucky, because I cracked my 1.4 with my SK6)? A shim is definitely going to be a future (and soon) purchase for me.
It's not unheard of, but if a sizable portion is completely gone, I'd say you're pretty lucky.
how big a chunk is missing? you are lucky.

I cracked my first 1.4, and it ran fine for a long time without the bottom right top corner, but be very carefull, because I finished it off when I changed out my waterblock a couple of weeks ago.

yeah, it appears as if the bottom right corner was beveled off like a countertop, and this bevel goes about halfway across the bottom of the core and tapers back to normal. I just wish my 1.4 still worked
Same thing happened w/ the chip that I'm running now. Somebody up there likes me :)
It still runs great @ 1200 Mhz.

My 750 has a jagged edge. It came taht way I was very skeptical about having to eat a CPU (first time building AMD) But I went ahead anyway and it worked just fine!
I was playing with my celly600 and used an old gorb. all of the edges are now jagged. It still works.

If so many processors seem to chug along quite happily after being damaged quite badly, is it just really bad luck that my 1.4 doesnt work at all anymore? My Duron works, and its missing a good sized chunk, but my 1.4 is only missing an extremely tiny piece that you need to look at carefully with a magnifying glass to even notice its missing. Should i give my 1.4another try? It can be a pain in my area to test stuff, because i don't know anybody that has a socket-A motherboard that supports 266FSB, none of the local shops do either, and my college made the mistake (so I think) of offering Dell pckages with either Pentium 3 or 4 CPU's in them.

i cracked 3 chips ...........2 duron 750, 1 thunderbird 1ghz
1 duron and 1 thunderbird worked fine even if cracked it but after taking off the heatsink to check what's the problem it stopped woking.......grrr.........what a waste of $$$
Yes my 1.2 gig worked for a long time with the corner crushed on it. But I swapped the HSF on and off many times. Finally the other day she died on me. So be carefull. You may want to take it apart and stick some fingernail polish on the area where it's chipped to keep any Artic silver or HS compound from getting in there. It also may prevent it from chipping any more.
I think I got that Idea from Colin. I should have listened to him. My 1.2 gig may still be alive if I did.
do you all RMA those dead chips? Can't most of the chips be returned to AMD? just an idea. don't know if the oval chip will be RMAed but I think AMD is pretty good about this.
dude, it's not really kosher to try and rma a chip that you've killed.. that's like trying to rma a board killed during a volt mod.. but that's my personal view.. everyone has to draw their own lines and boundaries.
on the other hand, i'd say it depends how it was killed.
AMD should make their cores more durable...
if taking off, or putting on.. a hsk chips it, kills it, kaput!
then i believe it should be replaced.
if you were using a standard cooling product, that is.
clamping down a waterblock i doubt is covered under "normal use"
but i consider this to fall under "defects in product quality and workmanship" and any warranty should provide coverage.
yeah, i agree, it's a pretty contentious issue. but how far do you take the warranty?
take a car for example: if someone drives like a tool and wears out their clutch (something a lot of americans may not be aware exists ;) ) really quickly, should the car company have to replace it? i don't think so, cos it's user error.
if someone places a hsf clumsily, then imho it's their fault. i've put on and taken off a lot of socket a procs, and never even vaguely chipped one. i'm just very careful.
i think it's very difficult for amd, cos then cannot possibly tell who's genuine and who drove down a dirt road at 120kph with their glaciator still on their processor.
