I have come across alittle bit of money and I wanna buy a new system for what money I have...Now, I went onto Newegg.com and saw that each CPU had an OEM version and a RETAIL version. What is this? The RETAIL version is the most expensive, but why and is it worth the price upgrade. I don't have money to blow, obviously, i'm only 14.

HEy, Im 14 to :)

Definately go OEM. OEM is the same a Retail but Retail comes with a nice package, like manuals and stuff, Warantys ect ect

OEM comes with the main thing you really need, the CHIP itself :)

And a plain white box

LOL but go with OEM its way cheaper

OEM is just the chip, Ratail is the chip in a pretty box with paperwork. Most of us here buy OEM

lucky you I am 24 and get confused for 30+

Yes OEM is cheap but if you dont plan to o/c (o/c voids warranties) go retail

Hey is this the tell us your age thread:D

Cause I'm 28 and I'll be 29 on the 25th. So I'm like twice as old as you guys and feel at least 10 times that. That's what working 65 hours a week at a job you hate will do so study hard and study something you like.

yah I'd go OEM all the way baby.

Well depending on how heavy of a overclock your trying to achieve I'd have to safely say go retail.. Yes most of the time they are about 20 bucks more, but what your getting is a "full 3 yr warranty from AMD" not a one month oops you cracked your chip and you cant warranty it now.. type warranty, I Rma'd a 1ghz Axia about 3 weeks ago to amd that had a tiny fragment broken off the corner of the cpu and Fry's Electronics refused to take it back even though it was a "Retail box" called AMD they had me another processor in 4 days total.. no questions asked.. Trust me Go Retail.. These cores are too damn fragile not too..
P.S. Dont throw away the box or the warranty book or the Cpu fan they use the serial numbers from the fan to verify if your chip was indeed a Retail version or not..

Definatly not "ham fisted" here I take the greatest care installing my new cpu's All I use are mainly Lapped Sk-6's, but I do still have 1 Swiftech 462a (just cant see paying 85 bucks for a cooler that only does 3-4 f diffrence than the lapped sk-6 :p :p So I'll stick with these.. By the way Palaminos run cold as hell anyways.. mine are running at 84f w/ 1.85Vcore crunching seti 24/7

Well if you are ham-fisted then you probably shouldnt be messing with a computer or a VCR for that matter..

Go oem. since you'll be overclocking it, you'll void that nice 3 year warrenty anyway.

After removing my CPU over 30 times for various reasons my CPU still looks like new except for AS-2 stains. No cracks and I still have my pads, they are needed for proper H/S to die seating. It can be done without them but you will crack and possibly ruin your CPU. As seen with Would's CPU but he was lucky, they break more than not.

How would anyone actually "physically" be able to tell that you killed your cpu due to O/C'ing anyways, lol Play stupid when you talk to them.. Don't let them know.. I just told the guy It locked up in the bios.. Worked for me and I was pushing 2.04 volts thru my 1.0ghz cpu.. Got her up to 1565 though, lol before she croaked.. even after croaking there was no signs of overclocking at all.. No pencil marks on the L1 bridges or L7 bridges.. They came off very easily with rubbing alcohol.. Just gotta prep your chip before you try to return it..

I've still never broken an amd cpu. I fried one once when my heatsink lug on the mobo broke off and it died.
