Yesterday I decided to push my P4 3.2C a little further in the quest to reach the elusive 4GHz. I got pretty close with 3.9 and after about half an hour it gets unstable and reboots. so i lowered it back to 3.7 and one of my Maxtor's doesn't show up now. I went into the bios and everything was fine. So i went back into windows and its still not there. I checked all the connectors and everything is fine. Any idea what could of happened? :bang head

Was your PCI frequency lock on when you increased your OC?

Try taking the cmos battery out and clear the cmos.

I was thinking about clearing the CMOS but didnt want to go thru the hassle of overclocking once again. I dunno if my PCI frequency lock was on. As a matter of fact i dont think i have seen that lock. What does the PCI frequency lock have to do with my SATA HD???

just write down all the settings you have and do the clear, i know what you mean by the hassle, have to remember voltages, timings, frequencies...but if you just write it down in order it should be pretty simple

I know that but what does PCI lock have to do with anything? especially my HD?

the pci lock will lock the pci frequency at default (33mhz) so it wont change with increases in fsb (because the agp, pci and fsb frequencies are all related). When the pci frequency gets too high it can mess with HD's sometimes.

Aphex Tom has it right. A long time ago, before finding this forum, and being new to OCing, I tried to OC a chip, WITHOUT locking the busses and it nutsed up the HD to the point it was no longer usable (not with FDISK, etc..) I think the bus hit something like 45 mhz... A bit too high (whoops!).

Lesson to be learned, always lock your bus.

this happens... strangely... I Find if you simply unplug the sata connectors, then reconnect.. power back on, and it works fine ..

i know what you mean, when i up the agp voltage .1+, then i put it back at default, my network card doesnt show up. i have to clear the bios in order for it to pop back in again.

If that SATA drive is hooked up the Intel ICH5 southbridge, raising FSB only 1Mhz will kick every SATA device if the PCI is not locked...
