I'm figuring out what to buy my son for Christmas. His PC is an Athlon 2800+, 1,024Mb RAM with a Gainward Ti4400 (128Mb). He plays Half Life 2, Doom 3 etc an awful lot. Would it be worth exchanging the Ti4400 (purchased 2+ years ago) for one of the new Geforce 6600s, which seem to be getting good reviews? I find it difficult to compare them because the benchmarks used in reviews for the 4400 are different from those used today. If it will blow his socks off I'll go for it but if it's only a marginal difference I'll wait awhile and go PCI Express next year. Thanks for any comments.

Itll blow more then his socks off, a ti4400 is over 4 years old. The 6600GT is a good deal, but i recomend the 6800 NU.
Compusa is having a big sale they have the 6800NU which are faster then the 6600GT, for only $200, actuall price is $300 but thier is a $100 rebate. The sale is ganna end in one more day so if you dont mind rebates then go for the 6800NU instead.
Anyway the 6600GT in Doom3 and HL2 will completetly crush the ti4400. For one he will be able to turn the details to thier max play with a higher resolution and also be able to turn on Filtering like AA which filters out those Jaggies, and AF which filters textures in far away distances to make them look all sharp and clean and not blurry.
From what i have seen PCI express is sorta iffy. Ifd you wanan go to that i suggest you wait along time for it to mature cuss right now its really buggy and doesnt work very well with any games.
Look at this review http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041004/index.html, go to the benchmark section here http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041004/vga_charts-08.html. See how the ti4200 and ti4600 are only getting like 11fps, using only a 1024x768 resoltuion with no AA and no AF on high quality in Doom3. Notice how the 6800 not the GT or Ultra just the 6800 gets 73fps. Percentage wise that is 620% faster, lol thats alot. Then look down and see the game running with 1024x768 resolution with 4xAA 8xAF the ti4200 gets only 7fps, and the 6800 gets 54fps. The 6600GT AGP is slightly slower then the 6800 but this gives you and idea of what to expect. To give an Idea fps below 35 is completetly unplayable to a gamer
If you decide to go PCI express youre ganna need a new mobo a new cpu and the video card
holy **** your cool! My dad would NEVER buy me a graphics card, or anything for my computer, also becuase he is retarted and he doesnt even know what a graphics card is. And all he ever does is bitch at me for playing games too much.

dont buy it the sale is over. buy a 6600GT AGP. you will be happy enough with it. it should hold u for 2 years.
