6800 bios flashing questions

I got the PNY 6800 from compusa and it runs like a champ. So I startin workin on the overclocking and got 390/785. I am very very happy with those speeds with the card. I also got the extra 4 pipes opened in rivatuner. Or at least it says i did. Now my question is how do I flash the bios to keep those pipes open? I know how to flash it with my speeds and will be doing that tommorow but i really want those pipes open with the flash to. The reason is that I use linux about 70% of the time and want them unlocked there. So is it possible to unlock them from a bios flash?

I have no idea if this is true or not, but couldn't you just flash it to a 6800 GT bios that uses all 16 pipes? Just adjust that bios to your speeds and your set. You may also have to change things like ram timmings if the cards use different ram, but I really don't know.

Im not toally sure but im thinking that you could flash to a GT bios im not toally sure tho like said above ^^^

Yup it will work, flashing it to an GT bios. Just make sure you set the clock speeds to your card.
Also always keep an PCI card handy in case it doesn't work.

Ok I will be flashing to the GT bios later today. First question though is I am going to use an Asus bios instead of PNY because PNY dosent have a 128MB GT. Is that ok? I have read people posting that it will work but I just want to make sure. Also if messes up the bios and it wont boot I just put in the pci vid card and boot off that and reflash the bios on the 6800 right? I just want to make sure I know howto save my card before I go out and try killing it.

OK I was looking at the diffrences between my edited bios and the default asus bios. In the VPGU section of the asus bios Thrtl has no vaule and I canot put one in. In my edited bios I have a value of 1.2v there. Will that be a problem flashing the card? Also the Device Name just says NVIDIA 6800 GT on the asus bios. I can just change my old bios to say gt and would that work with unlocking the pipes?

Ok so I went and tried the Asus bios and it failed. Next i edited my original bios and changed it from a 6800 to a 6800 GT. When I try to flash it i get the following error
Adapter: Geforce 6800 (40DE,0041,0000,0000) b:01,AGP,D,:00,f:00
Warning: Firmware image PCI Device ID (10DE.0045)
does not match adapter PCI Device ID (10DE.0041)
Error: GPU mismatch

I get the same error with the Asus bios but it has more warnings. So how do I get the gt bios to flash correctly.

I downgraded my nvflash to 4.42 like the sticky says to use. When I used the - -u -2 options I got my "GT" bios to flash. When i reboot though it still says its a 6800 and dosent enable to extra 4 pipes on its own. So what do I do next?

Try the EVGA Bios. Remeber if it doesnt work then relfash back youre old bios

Problem is our cards are hardware locked so you have to mod the board and i found a sticky in another forum on how its done.Ill post back i have to find it again since i lost the link.Ok i found it here if you do this let us know how it turns out im just not brave enough to try it and im waiting onEvga to get me a 6800GT for the step up program which is on back order.

I used the evga bios and yah it now says my card is a GT but it is still locked. Gigabit I had seen that post on the hardmod and was hoping I didnt have to do that to get those pipes unlocked. I am going to email the guy who wrote that and ask him what are the chances of success since I know the pipes can be unlocked fine. Also is it possible to revert back after doing it and such. The problem is that though PNY were stupid and put a big sticker over the points that need to be soldered that voids ur warrenty to remove em. Your welcome.If the pipe were software masked it would be no problem.But anyway i saw something were unwinder RT's builder is releasing a patch script to remove the hardware mask this will allow the bios to unlock the pipes.But i might have miss read this.Im not sure how the patch scripts work.i need to read up on this some more.

Thats a link I found at guru3d about my question. In there Unwinder posts a couple of scripts but I have no clue how to use them or which one to use. I have seriously looked at the hardmod but I believe it is slightly above what my soldering skills can do. If I ddint have to worry about the resister I would go for it but I dont believe I can do the reasister with out messing it up big time. Also after removing my sticker to even see those bridges my warrenty is fully gone so I dont want to mess this card up.

Dude patch script is easy to use just c:/riva tuner open patch scripts find the nv40 swsomething script and drag you bios file to that folder click on the pacth script and then it will do its thing

lol yes i knew softmod voided it to but i can easily return it to compusa with that sticker still on if soemthin had gone wrong . Ok I found the script and went to edit my .rom file and it gave me the error
"This file is not certified to use this patch script, therefore it may not function properly. Are you sure you want to continue?"

I clicked on yes. I flashed my bios with a evga GT bios and it boots up and windows sees it as a GT but the pipes still are not unlocked by default. Did I do something wrong or do I need to use an Ultra bios??

I used the Ultra bios from PNY and my card is recognized as an untra now in windows but those damn pipes and shaders are still not unlocked. I thought I had found the solution to my problem with this script but so far no avail.

Well I used the script that I posted above on my ultra bios and rebooted and flashed. Booted up and all pipes and vertex shaders arer working. Thanks again to CandyManCan and Gigabit for all the help they have given me.

I tried 3dmark03 with my 390/784 and my comp would completely freeze. So now I am lowering my speeds down and going to see if I can get it to go all the way through.

I went back to stock speeds of 325/700 and I scored 9450 in 03. That is a big drop of what I had before of 10650. I am going to start oc and see how it goes.

I believe when I patched the NU bios originally and tried the extra pipes or shaders didnt work cause the NU bios didnt have them enabled. But I shall try again. Also what type of bios are you using?

Yep just tried it. Worked wonderfully. 105fps in CS:S stresstest. 1280x1024 every setting on max. I am quite happy with my card now. Will post back in a little bit with my new 3dmark03 scores.

Also I think we might want CandyManCan to add that script to the 6800 flashing sticky So others can use it.

LOL i just ran 3Dmark05 and got 4107 not my best but its only off by 9 points with differnt drivers that why im sure its off. .But i think its great.

I just got 10818 in 3dmark03. Personal best there. I will try 05 in a few so We can compare scores. Allthough u do have a nice gigaherz more processing power then I do. Also what are your timings for your 6800? Mine are 390/784 completely stable.

Is 05 more gpu intensive the 03? You are poleing a good 1ghz more in cpu speed then me. So unless the gpu matters that much you should be up with me on 05. My gpu speeds are not that much faster then yours.

yeah from what i seen and heard the 05 favors AMD and ATI if you had a X800pro you would have scored around 1000 more easy.And yes its very gpu intensive but i have ran mine at 400/820 or around there and score less than that.You got my best score by 200 points.

Hey guys, need help, does anyone have the original unmoddified PNY BIOS Geforce 6800 NU (Compusa Special) that they backed up from their card? I don't have a floppy so when I flashed mine, I couldn't save it, and now I need it. I'd appreciate it.

This is odd. I got my Nv5 silencer today. Installed that. Next I flashed a PNY bios with added voltage on my card, and that worked fine. Overclocked the card higher, to 425/830, and get this, my 3dmark 03 scores tumbled. Before I scored 12,700, and now I can barely score 12,000, and have even scored in the 11,000.

Anyone have any idea whats going on, maybe it change the memory timings, is about the only thing I can think of. I verfiied that it was still in 16x6 mode.

Again, if anyone has the original bios, I'd appreciate it.

If any of you would like i can patch your bios for you if your not sure about how its done.But only for 16/6 configureration .I have to reseaarch a little more on how to cutom pipe like say 12/6 or 16/4 or any configuration possible.The 6800 le's might need something like 12/4 or 8/6.Since not all cards can run 16/6.Also some good news about this.With the rt softmod.I got some slight artifacts in 3D05 and and some bames in cerian areas.But with the ptch script and raising the throttle voltage its gone.So if your have some slight artifacting this might solve the problem.

That is a site to show how to take what pipes you know work and convert the script to unlock the right ones. Right now I am not quite sure on what exactly you have to do because all my pipes worked fine from the beginning. If you guys can tell me though what pipes or shaders work or dont work when you try to unlock them with rivatuner I could possibly go back and figure out exactly what script you would need to use.

That script aint gonna work if you used the one that came with RT you need to use the one i posted above this post i think its 3 posts up. I can patch it for u with the right patch if you want. Then just drag the rom to your flash floppy and flash your card.Just uninstall NVstrap frist befor you flash it

Just back down some on the OC that core OC is really high start at the begining again and keep going til score drop.What bios did you use.You patched your pny bio i hope.Dont use a GT or ultra bios its not gonna help you any because DDR3 timmings are differnt than DDR1. And that could be why

PS i have a ? about rt you might know the answer to. How do i set the vcore monitoring to check the right voltage.Right now its saying 1.2v but it said that with the stock bios also.So how do i pick the right settings.I know to open setup and click more then auto select and it gives a few options there. If you let Rt settings stick you get 1.2 volts unless you modded the idle vcore to 1.4v.I dont get it.Even if i force 3d it still shows 1.2v and thats not right.

This is the first time I have ever used it or even ever overclocked a video card. I have just been reading a bunch of forum posts and whatnot recently trying to learn how to do it. I honestly havent even started messing with voltage options. I figure possibly if I get a betts heatsink for my vidcard i might start looking ito it.

Well I just got windows reinstalled and rivatuner says my card is 16x1,6. So now we know the mod truely works. Now just got to get everything set up and try some benchmarks.

Well i was pretty sure it worked. I uninstall rivatuner but nvstrap frist right before flashing and then uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers so i was about 98% sure it worked plus Everest Home Edition showed 12/5 when i uninstalled nvstrap as did rt right before i shut down again to flash.And then i checked it with EHE again and it showed 16/6 after the flash.Then uninstalled and reinstalled the drives and still 16/6 so i was pretty sure but now we are 100% sure cool.

I just tried 3dmark03 with speeds of 400/800 and it just exits randomly during the tests. No artifacting or anything. It just exits back to my desktop with no errors. I had these speeds before so I know that my card can handle it. Do you have any clue as to why its crashing now and wasent before? Also how do I check the temp of my 6800? I want to check the temp and see whats its at.

The overclock is fine. I'm running extra voltage through the motherboard bios, and extra voltage through the flash. Good cooling I used the PNY NU bios off the Mktech website, and it's suppose to be fine.

I'm thinking that either that, that bios has relaxed memory timings, even though it has no option to modify it, because my 3dmark scores went down. I also suspect that the memory timings might be low, because even though I added voltage, the memory overclock went through the roof. It's at like 850 right now! Either that, or I have too many drivers installed.

Problem is, I can't try it, because my waterpump sprang a leak this afternoon, so the rig is down.

So, does anyone have a virgin backup bios from their Pny 6800NU Compusa special?

when you first open up rivtuner there are 2 sections(not counting tabs).you want the top one,goto customize,choose the 4th window(graphics subsystem diagnistic report),goto the bottom screen and scroll all the way down it should be the last thing on the list

the second one down.since your hardware masked you will need to create your own patch script to use with rivatuner.it's pretty easy and I can give you all the info you need but make sure you can open the pipes and shader first.

create a text file name it "NV4xBIOSHwUnitsMaskEliminator.rts"(minus the quotes) then copy the text inside the text file.you have to make sure you can see known file extentions or you will end up with a file named NV4xBIOSHwUnitsMaskEliminator.rts.txt after you have that click on it and it should ask you to point it to the BIOS you want modded.if you havn't extracted your BIOS yet I sugest you read this stickie first as it will give you all the info you need http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=342919

its u cause i can see it but I just wanted to tell you ppl that I could unlock my vp (which was vertex unit 3) but i couldn't unlock the pipes without artifacts (pixel unit 1 was the one that had the damaged pipe) I was just wondering what vertex units/pixel unit were locked in ur cards just to see if certain cards that could be unlocked had different locked vertex units/pixel units. So if ppl would pm me or post on the forum their units that were locked, that would be great.

Thinksnow those are deffinatly artifacts and so far there is no update to fix this. Unless u want to hardmod ur card

gives me 448 1.9 ....:o but even at 435 1.5 my card artifacts into a lock up.

Ok that script(the one provide in RT)for software masked bios which i would say only 3% of the cards out are software masked. if you have ran RT and found that you can unlock all the pipes and vp's then you can use this script here to mod your bios

Allright I have got a bit lost in this topic...
I know that my card is hardware locked. I see that you guys have patch scripts to activate the missing pipes and vertex shader. I see you saying to make sure you can get them to work correctelly before flashing it with a modded bios to do it. How exactelly do I do that?

Check them off and then reboot and if it boots with no artifacts your 50% of the way there now you have run a few bench mark and up your OC and see if you have any artifacts anywere .

Ah allright I am at 16x6 and so far have been able to do 2 runs of 3Dmark03 and I got a "IDirect3DDevice9::Present failed: Device lost (D3derr_DEVICELOST).
wtf is that? unstable? would flashing to a BIOS of 1.4 help?

Edit - After running some more and playing some games I have had no problems. Maybe that was just some kind of 3Dmark05 error unrelated of overclock?

PCGUY I have never herd of that error before so i would just ignore it. lol now you need to goto the sticky on flashing the 6800 bios at the top on the main nvidia foru page. We have typed out detailed instructions on how to flash the bios so those are unlocked all the time.

You dont wanna run 1.4 to long depending on temps i know it didnt help my card once i hit my max it was the same at 1.2 as at 1.4 just hotter..And the rest of what you said is right .If your having no aritfacts now you can flash it now you have tested enough to know if you anyproblems. Sounds like your good for the script thats posted in the thread and below if you wanna copy it here..And just to let you know i can OC to 410/900 but my score's dont get any better after 385/820 even with 1.4 v but my temps went over 76c after like 10 minutes playing far cry.But your card has a better h/s but i still wouldnt chance 1.4 unless you only put it in the 3D and throttle only and idle at 1.2v

Woot I love 1.4v :-)
400/860 and only a few more 3DMarks untill I hit 12k :) (lost some memory clocks when GPU went high, but rather have higher GPU than higher mem)

Temps maxed out in 3Dmark at 80*C for about 1/2 a second, but i'm not worried. These GPU's are made for high heat, just look at the WARNING temp... 120*C. At that point it warns you and downclocks the card... you would need to get somewhere around 150*C for actual damage. And 1.4 is only 3D normal/idle is still 1.2v.
BTW I had to use BiBiTorv to set 1.4v, OmniExtreme doesn't read BIOS's quite right and says most 6800's already run at 1.4v.

Good to here it work PCGUY. I just check my bios with Nibitor and it is saying that my voltage is only 1.2v. Um maybe adding some more andI can get better then 390/784 out of my card.

I had to check "Extend Voltage Table" and "Extend Labeling" to get mine to work correctelly. I don't think VID mode works exactelly... after the voltage mod my VID went from 1 to 2, which is correct by reading NiBiTor, but it never leaves 2 when it should. I just used the "Exact Mode" option and set it to 1.4v.

Look at this, this is a stock GT rev .01 bios from PNY. It isnt moddified yet and for the 3d voltage it says 1.3v, Now notice It says Voltage level 1 2 and 3.

1 says 1.1v we know that is 2d voltage, Level 2 says 1.3v and its green im assuming this means its the 3d voltage, but what is voltage level 3 it says 1.4v

This makes sense with riva tuner, Tuner says voltage level 0, 1, 2 tho instead of 1, 2, 3. So this mean that level 1 for riva tuner is the 3d voltage, and level 2 for NIBITOR 1.9 is the 3d voltage.


Also when i change the voltage in this bios in the tab exact mod from 1.3v 3D to 1.4v 3D, the green voltage in the tab VID mod in this pick goes to the 1.4v on top.

Also when i change the voltage in the in the tab exact mod, from 1.4v to 1.6v, a whole new bar pops up saying voltage 4, and it read in green 1.6v.


So to me this means i was right in Riva tuner, Level 0 is the 2d voltage, level 1 is the 3d voltage, and level 2 is the extra voltage the bios support but doesnt use cuss its set to 1.3v instead.

See why would 3RD be 3D, when the stoc bios you download, is set @ 1.3v for the 3d voltage, the 3d voltage in the one highlighted in the green. I reflashed to make sure my other 1.3v flash went good and riva tuner still says 0 1.1v, 1 1.3v, and 2 1.4v

Btw that is the oldest OMNI extreme, FX 1.0 is the first version, the latest for Omni is 1.5, and no OMNI and NIBITOR are made by the same guy NIBITOR is just a new name, so the actuall latest version is 1.9.

Yea i always use that i just now started using NIBITOR so i can see what the 3D voltage is being confirmed @, and it is saying that 1.3v is 1.3v in green, and if you set it @ 1.4v it says 1.4v in green, and 1.6v it says 1.6v i ngreen and so on.

I just flashed to 1.4v and here is what riva tuner says, now it says 350/500 1.4v, with the 1.3v bios it says 300/500 1.3v. See im thinking that the extra voltage level isj ust what the bios is cappible of doing but that doesnt mean its actually running @ that voltage. Once i Extend the Voltage table, it givesm e another voltage option for 1.6v, when i select that it adds another voltages level, so together thier are then 4 level's. See all those levels im guessing is what the bios support's. and the voltage the card is actually running @ is that voltage next to youre clock speed in riva tuner where it says 350/500 1.4v or 350/500 1.3v for me.

My fault .Im sorry about that.I was in a bad mood yesterday.But even for a Gt you still have a decent OC and i still say you got what you paid for,Unless its a gainward GS and your told it will OC to a certian point you got what you paid and more.And even the GS's i dont think are guarenteed to hit 420.I just checked they are only guarenteed to 400/1100Whats a BFG 6800GT OC come clocked at?Do they gaurentee a certain higher clock speed?.I do know BFG has a pretty good tech line they helped me with my BFG fx 5900 when i frist bought it.
