View Full Version : looking for a good external hdd. any suggestions?
im looking for a external hdd that is 80gb or greater, and is resonably priced (below $200).i would also really like to get one that is powered through usb/firewire too. compatibility with linux would be a plus!
what would you guys recommend?
Nowadays there's no need to really buy an external HD so to speak.
I'd just buy an adapter/case thing and then a 200gig seagate IDE drive (or whatever hdd you want). I don't know if you can get one that runs off just the USB power though...

One review says that he had minor issues powering the drie through USB though. You might want to just get 5400rpm drive or something if that'll help with the power consumption...
it seems maybe only the 2.5" drives can be powered by usb?
There isnt enough power to handle a full size 7200RPM 200G+ HDD from any USB port. When choosing an external enclosure the most important thing is a high quality adaptor/wallwart/PSU since most of the IDE-USB circuits are generally the same.
can 3.5" drives smaller than 200gb be powered by usb? e.g. 80gb
No. USB just doesnt have the power to support standard size HDD.

i guess i'll have to go with a laptop drive. does anyone know of some good 2.5" drives? i would prefer something in the range of 40-80gb.
