The new Linux's (Linuxii?) are easy to install. Mandrake 8.0 took me about 45 minutes and setting up my internet connection, which routes through an intermediary machine used as a firewall, was simplistic (I hope, here's where I jinxs myself). I'm using Linux to post this message. A LOT easier than 6.0 was!!!

Have fun w/ Linux!

Its ok when everything works, but It can be a problem if you have an ATI Radeon or a GeForce 2 xxxx or GeForce 3

How do I configure it so when my system boots up it default boots to win98 every time? If the power goes out I want my system to contimue setiing once the power resumes. Right now it boots to a screen where I have to choose which os to boot and if I don't it defaults to Linux.

GRUB or LILO?

I'm not sure. I've no idea what GRUB is. When I ran Mandrake 6.0 I used LILO and this doesn't look anything like it. It's a graphicaldeal, not command line interface, and I have to arrow up or down to the specific boot option I want from the listed choices which include.... Hold on I'm gonna reboot and scrutinize it in more detail, maybe it will have something up on the screen that will say if it's GRUB or LILO or something else.

I'll be back.

I'm back. The screen is a medium blue color with a five pointed star in a very pale blue slightly right of center in the background. On the left it says in pale white letters:

Welcome
to Linux-Mandrake

On the right are the boot options which are:

linux
linux-nonfb
failsafe
windows
floppy

Below that on the bottom is a timer that runs for about 5 seconds or until you move the selected choice or press enter. Is that GRUB?

I think it's LILO with a graphical shell. The last time I used LILO it was text mode only, man have things changed! It will probably come back to me but the sooner I get the solution the sooner I'll be sure that a power outage will result in my machines going back into windows and continue setiing so if anyone can give me the answer now I'd appreciate it. Also can I use the "themes" that are on my Mandrake 6.0 cds for version 8.0?

sounds like grub to me...

check out /etc

if there is a file called lilo.conf then you are using lilo.

I still use text mode lilo but I can't say I've heard of a grahical lilo. I'm still using SuSE 7.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised after doing an apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade on sid the other week, and getting a little menu from Lilo now. I do not know if this is what you are using or not, but Lilo now seems to have a little menu feature, which is nice IMHO.

I finally got the boot preference straight. It was LILO. It was a very simple operation to get it set to windows as the prefered boot os. Too bad it wasn't clear that it was so easy or I'd have done it sooner. Now I hope I can get my sound card to work.

if u have partition magic then u can also use bootmagic that comes with it.....

In My opinion third party boot managers are best as they are not biased towards any OS. (Although GRUB is intended to be OK for any OS).

You should be careful tho', that a Boot Manager is configurable in your fav OS and that it understands OSes ie allows initrds in Linux.

does graphical LILO slow down boot time?

When I ran previous Linuxii I used the text lilo, with Mandrake 8.0 I'm using the graphical version. Comparing those experiences I'd say no but that's not a true test. Still if it is slower it can't be more than one second in my oppinion.
