I have a problem, and it's just kicking my butt. So I figgered I'd turn to you all for some help.

I'm trying to get an old laptop (486DX2) networked to my parent's main computer, so they can share some files. The main box is running W98SE, and networks properly. I've tested it.

The problem is with the laptop. It's running Windows 95. I've set everything up properly, as far as I can tell. I'm not new to this whole networking thing.

The problem I run into on the laptop is this: I cannot access the network, even locally. When pulling up network neighborhood, it only shows "Entire Network" but no other computers, not even the laptop. When I double-click on the "Entire Network" it just tells me that the network is unavailable. So I did a "Find" on the laptop's name, and it shows up. When I double click it, it tells me that the computer is not logged in. So I tell it to "Close all programs and log in as a different user" and login with a password. Still get the same. Can anyone help? Here's what my network looks like:

Network Components Installed:
Client for Microsoft Networks
Dial-up Adapter
SH572B-3Com OC 10/100 LAN PCCard
TCP/IP - Dial-up Adapter
TCP/IP - NIC
File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks

Why is it not logging me in? Can anyone help?

*edit: gave it the wrong title. Sorry.*

Strange, the laptop should still show up even in the network neighborhood even when not connected to a network.

In the network settings, what is the primary network logon set to?? Should be Client for ms networks, not Windows Logon.

Oops. For got to add that. I've tried it for either Windows Login or Client for Microsoft Networks.

And I think the problem is that the laptop will not not login, even though I enter the login and password, and it doesn't show up as being logged in. I'm trying some more things right now, I'm removing everything in the network and adding it back.

And I checked under "Passwords" in the control panel, and played with those, but that didn't make a difference either.

Seem to have got it working. I removed EVERYTHING under the network, and brought it back up, and it seems to work.

Sometimes it's the only way, glad to hear you have got it working.

Well, I thought I did.

Let me clarify.

I can see myself on the network when I have the primary login type set to "Client for Microsoft Networks." But I have to enter a password (currently blank). When I do that and open "Network Neighborhood," it shows both "Entire Network" and my computer. So then I set it to "Windows Logon" so it doesn't ask for a password, and reset. When it comes back up, it goes into Windows without a password, and I can see myself under "Network Neighborhood." So I reboot again, and it gets into Windows without a login, but this time, the network is not available to me. What's going on? I'd like to have this computer work in a network without entering a password, like in does on my parent's desktop computer. And I've done this before under W98, but this has got my butt kicked! Any help? Anyone?!

(And thanks for your help, RED Hot Machine! But I can use more, if'n ya gots it!)

Okay, well....poo. It's working now. Just had to refresh for a while. I let it sit for a few minutes then refreshed, and sho nuff, there am I! Probably something to do with the fact that it's a 486DX2, neh?

That is normal, it takes my 1.4 a few minutes to find the other two computers on my network.

I ran into another problem when actually trying to network: no connectivity at the hub. But I think that has more to do with my driver install, since it asked me for the Windows 95 floppies, and I don't have any. Can anyone help me out? I'd buy them from you, if you have them in floppy form. The laptop doesn't have a CD-ROM, which is why we're trying to network it in the first place.

Wa11y, do you have a windows 95 CD.

If you do then here is a possiable solution.

Note down each file that windows 95 asks for, when you install the new networks drivers.

Do this by saying skip file each time windows asks for a file.

Then using winzip or similar, open the cab files on the windows 95 cd, on the other machine. Then copy these files to the laptop using a floppy.

Put all the files in a directory, and then try reinstall the drivers on the laptop, by pointing it towards this directory.

Good idea. But I don't have a copy of 95 at all. I'll talk to my roomies. Maybe one of them has a copy.
