Turn it on and you should be able to feel which side is hot...just be sure to turn it off right away.

I found out which is hot and which is cold. But now for the stupid ? how do I mount the pelt with a waterblock. Do I mount the shim then the pelt then thecoldplate then the waterblock or the shim the cold plate then the plet then the waterblock.

ok, the way to do it is this: cold plate pelt waterblock, clamped togeather at around 150-300 PSI then this mounted on socket, shims help prevent damage to core but reduce cooling effectiveness and if made of a comnductor risk shorting out stuff on the CPU...
I use a copper shim on my CPU as the water block is much less wobbly when first applying pressure on the water block mounts. I have a large water block and it never seemed to fit right just sitting on the die. I marked my Peltier with a marker so that I would know hot and cold. Hook it up to your cordless drill battery for testing!
