View Full Version : 3DMark03 not showing video card speeds
1)Okay so I have recently set up a new computer and installed a ati 9800 pro and when I run 3dmark03 I get a decent score (6076) but it doesn't show the core or memory clock speeds...it just says "NA." What do I need to change to have it read? 2)Also while I am posting what type of overclocking is possible with the stock cooling of the video card? 3)What is the ATItool that I have read about? Would this be a good route to go to get a bit more proformance out of my card safely with stock cooling?
Thanks

I think it depends on what drivers you are using.
I have seen others with the same drivers and the speed shows up. I downloaded the lateest off of ATI.com and if I remember right there wasn't a speed with the driver that I installed from the support disk that came with the card. My fear is that my mobo might be doing some on the fly ocing Because I had a hard freeze that cause a black screen and restart while playing Mafia....anything that you can think of?

Get the program called ATI Tool and let us know what it says your clock speeds are running at. If they are at stock boost them up a bit. I used to have a 9800Pro and I overclocked it.(when I say used too, I didn't kill it I just gave it to my dad).
As for cooling, get a VGA Artic cooler, they are the best for cooling ATI cards.
Do you know what core it has?
I had a r350, if you have a r360 is is able to tell you how hot the core is.
Let me know!
My name is James by the way.
Oh yeah, and welcome to the forums!

Make sure your mobo drivers are installed correctly, then un-install video drivers, run DriverCleaner, and re-install your card drivers. I'd get the 4.11's from ATI site.
After that, try Rivatuner to see if it can detect your card speeds.
I thought that all the ATI cards had the R350 chips. Is there a way to check without popping the heatsink off? I am not sure if I am ready to go to a additional cooler I was just thinking about sticking with the stock and using a non aggressive OC setting. Will ATItool tell me temperatures if I do have a R360 chip or do I need a different program to do that...if so wouldn't that be the easiest way to tell if it was a R360 chip?
Thanks for your help and welcoming me to the forum James!
Okay so ATItool tells me that my core is @391.5 and mem@ 344.25 while it states that the default is 378 and 338 so now I am really confused....I have tried every combination of uninstalling the ATI drivers and running driver cleaner before reinstalling the latest drivers...I have tried to reinstall the Via 4 in 1 drivers and used the newest....I have set my bios back to default settings...NOTHING works I cannot get the damn 3dMark03 to recognize the gpu or memory speed.... :bang head
So I tried running Mafia again which should be a joke for a Radeon 9800pro 128mb....well I got a little way into the game and Black screen to reboot....What the hell is going on...I know that my PSU is just a Raidmax one that came with the case but it is 420w so I don't think that is it...Some people with A8V's seem to have to disable the AGP fast write...is that what is causing my instabilities?...That still dosen't explain the seemingly self overclocked video card or the lack of clock reporting on 3Dmark03...I feel like I am the only one with this issue since I cannot seem to find any information on the problem...Nor have any suggested fixes solved the issue....PLEASE HELP.
Okay on a different subject....is it same to run ATItool to find the max memory and core speeds if the clock doesn't have on board temp monitoring and is only running on stock cooling....Will it just clock to a speed that is safe regardless of other factors?
Thanks people

Try turning off fast writes, make sure you primary graphic hardware is set to AGP not PCI as I had to change this on my board (which is crap btw, don't buy an MSI).
If you any unnessasry hard drives or cd drives or fans that you don't really need running try unplugging those from the system just to see if it is a fault in the PSU.
Get RivaTuner as well, that should tell you what core you have, if it gives temperature readings you've got a r360 core which is the core from the 9800 XT.
Have you tried re installing your benchmarking program?
When I run Rivatuner I get the same core and memory clock speeds of 391.5 and 344.25 just like with Atitool...For the chip seem like it is a R350....Can ATItool still be used safely to find max core and memory speeds on stock cooling?

It never shows my speeds correctally...dont worry about it. just ignore it.

He has got instability problems.
What's the cooling like in your case?
The cooling shouldn't be an issue. I have 2 fans in PSU (front and Back) + 2 other fans 8cm on back + 1 fan on side 8cm + 1 Front intake (80 or 92mm not sure) plus then heatsink with fan on CPU and GPU. Here is what is new...I have uninstalled 03 and got 05....Ouch is all that I can say but it recognizes the speeds. The video card is still showing as 491.5/344.25 like in Atitool and Rivatuner. The first time I ran 3dmark05 I got about 30 seconds before it crapped out...Rebooted into bios and when to defaults...Adjusted the "aperature size" back to 128mb, "fast write" changed to disabled and "DBI to output" to enable....Rebooted and it ran through...not fast but it made it none the less with a score of 2300ish. So I still don't know why the card is running fast... but it seems stable with fast write off. What kind of gain does Fast Write allow? Hmmm I am trying to think of anything else...
Anyone...Please help me figure out why the vid card just doesn't run at default
By the way since I now have the clock able to read in 3DMark05 (must have had a bad install of 03) I am now on the quest of figuring out why my card is naturally overclocked at default settings....here is the clicky....Come join the fun or if you don't feel like it Thank you to everyone for helping me figure out this crazy thing ==Peace out

I shouldn't worry about it running at those speeds, they are fine.
I'm concerned that it is froze on you. When I had my 9800Pro I oc'd the crap out of it and it was so durable I was amazed!
Fast writes doesn't give me any benefits at all.
Good luck trying to solve why it is crashing.

The card BIOS was probably edited to default to those higher speed's. Anybody can get the util to edit a BIOS, it's easy. If your having problems at those speeds then you might want to try flashing back to an unmodified stock BIOS, or you could simply do a backup of the current BIOS, edit it, and then re-flash it.
