Windows lag???

Having issues with lag... Running windows... example: i hit start then program files and program files lags on opening. also when im scrolling down pages or playing any game.

System specs:
winxp pro SP2
Amd 2000+
384mb ram (128generic, 256 buffalo)
abit nf7-s

what ive tried:

You need to check to see if the running process is Isass or lsass. Isass is optix.pro, a virus. Lsass is a windows process, but could also be a virus... if your virus software is updated, and running succesfully then you are probably fine. If it hasn't been starting lately, then you have a problem. I do not see any process listed that represents your AV software.

For future reference, press windows+r and type cmd then hit enter. Then type tasklist and hit enter - this will display a list of all process names with some details. From there, you can click on the icon in the top left and select all then copy, and paste that into your browser... That should take about 5 seconds, rather than typing out all the process names and memory usage. ;)

Did you install drivers for any of your hardware or are you using defaults? It sounds like you may not have your video drivers installed, and there is a slight hang when the menu is trying to fade into view.

Right click on my computer, select properties, click on the advanced tab, then click performance settings, and change for best performance, then hit apply. Now try going to programs under the start menu and see if the hesitation is still there.

Also I close the bullcrap the little ATI programs. it is Lsass.exe i don't know where that makes a large differnce. and what is this wmiprvs.exe i know if you add an m to the end its sasser but isd wmiprvse a windows process thats important?

I've ran trendmicro's housecall, panda soft, and ravanti and they found no viruses. Also, I ran Spybot S&D, Ad-aware, hijackthis. still not sure what the issue is.

Could you answer my earlier questions please, I was waiting for a couple answers before I took any more guesses:

1) Driver status: what are the version numbers on the drivers you have installed?
2) Did you do what I told you to with changing performance settings? What was the result?

@drew: It doesn't come with home... it could probably be downloaded somewhere if you google, and then if you invoke it from the command prompt it may still work the same way. Search for tasklist.exe.

o i already had the best performance on. and im running ati's 4.11 drivers. and the newest Nforce2 drivers. and newest drivers for both monitors. i've assigned drivers to where they needed. all were current as of like a week ago.
 
Then theres nothing wrong with your computer that I can see... Are you sure this is slower than normal, or is it just not as fast as you would like it to be? Just for good measure press windows+r type msinfo32 hit enter, then expand the components menu and click on problem devices - what is listed there?

Are you sure you are using best performance under visual effects? Because most people don't use this setting, and your windows would look like w2k instead of XP with all the colors.

Download tweakui and install it. Click on the mouse setting and move menu speed all the way over to fast - this will make the menu's open instantly when you point your mouse at them. If you google you could also find some regedits that will do this, however tweakui is kinda handy.

@Quattro: Read the end of my last post. Tasklist is the command I told him he could issue at the command prompt (he didn't really need to, but I was telling him in case he wanted to use it in the future). XP home edition does not include the tasklist function.

Did you just install a new ATI graphics driver? If so, Windows has probably turned off AGP acceleration, turn it back on through the ATI control panel.
 
There are also a set of windows updates that significantly decreases the systems speed. I call it SSSS or sudden system slowdown syndrome, often caused by users "updating" windows.
 
Sun runner, that all depends... I manually install all of my updates, so I can accurately judge the results of performing that update. I have every patch installed on my system, and it works as well as it did on the day I installed windows. No slowness, no problems... and I'm at 1.5Ghz, so I notice if its any slower than normal.
