Is that bad? Probably caused by uneven waterblock installation/tighten down. My card seems to be giving me problems now, but who knows how long they've been there.

I'm assuming it cant be good. How big are the chips?

I'm not talking huge pieces taken out. Let's just say the corners of the little square are not as sharp or shiny. I'll try and take a pic.

You have to remember that with the size of the transistors these days, the smallest of a chip could mean missing a few hundred thousand transistors. Some pics would definately be helpful.

What sorts of problem he's having has to do with assessing the problem, does it not?

Well, a couple of weeks ago it rebooted on me and when the bootup screen came up there were small white blocks all over the screen and missing text. And windows would not load. If i ran in safe mode, and unistalled the card (9800 pro), when windows started up again after the screwed up bootup screen, it looked fine, but thats with no drivers.

The chips in your core could well be the source of the problems. I'd try re-installing your drivers, and seeing if the problem persists.

Then again, I've chipped several bare-die AMD processors fairly badly, and the processor continued to work, and overclock, perfectly afterwards. I think it's a matter of how deep the chip is.

Do you have a pictures? My fingers are crossed for you :)

I'll get some pics up tomorrow probably, my digital camera has drained batteries...once again.

Well, if it still boots I doubt that you did enough damage to kill the silicon and transistors themselves. However, whatever chipped the core could have imparted enough force to sever a few connections to the chip, which would cause some instability.

Hopefully reinstalling drivers will help...

When this happened, I tried reinstalling the ati drivers and also the omega drivers with no avail...

My guess is that your core is toast. *Suggesting illegal activities is NOT allowed on these forums. --JigPu*

I was messing around with my system today and I decided to finally clean off the AS5 from the Maze4 water block. Its still attached to the loop, but unattached to any graphics card (waiting for my x800 xt). Anyways, the ATi logo is burned into the mounting surface on the water block, and the corners that were chipped also show up on the surface as tiny pits. This thing had good AS5 coverage so I don't think that was the issue. Here are some pics.

I chipped my 6800GT core but not nearly as bad as youre's looks its very tiny barely noticable thank godm y GT works 100% without problems and gets the same scores as before ...

Its overtightening those stupid springs on the waterblock hold down. I just feel so helpless when they're not tight...
