I'm loading Boinc SETI on another computer, but when I tell it to connect to project and give it my identifier (via cut and paste so no errors there) and the url of http://setiathome.berkeley.edu Boinc reports that it could not contact the project home page.
I've loaded the url with and without the WWW and with and without the ending / and always get the same results.
What am I doing wrong? :bang head

There is only two lines needed to attach to the project for Seti Bonic and it sounds like you are entering the correct information. They are:
SETI@home URL: . . . . . http://setiathome.berkeley.edu
Your account ID: . . . . . 302c1cb7f97662651d57b2xxxxxxxxxx
These are from Boinc Admin email with SETI@home new account confirmation when you first activated your Boinc Account.
If you are using the above correct information, which it sounds like you are, then try uninstalling Boinc. Delete the Boinc directory and all files that it leaves behind. Download a fresh copy and re-install Boinc to try again. Over the past couple of days, I have had a several 'could not connect' messages myself, so it may just be that the servers are busy. I would also check your computers on your account page to see if that computer is showing up there.

Yep, that's the data I am loading, and I'm doing it on a fresh machine with a brand new download of the boinc software.

Yeah, for some reason seti won't run on my PCs right now either. All of a sudden it won't work. Climate prediction is still going though. To busy to mess with it and don't really care all that much anymore. GL getting it to work.

Boinc has two problems that seti classic does not have:
1. You must know a really ugly account code.
2. When initially loading boinc it is nearly impossible to connect to the seti url.
These two items are a significant hurdle to the impatient and to new users.
the project has also been unstable this weekend and as of now it wil be down for roughly 24hrs. while they make some db changes. give it a day or so and try again. Your problem maybe be a server probelm not your client install

Grrrrrr, problem still remains. Any creative ideas out there or do I have to consider an alternate project (non-seti)?

Just a thought but what about hardware or software firewall? Have you checked to make sure that the Bonic_gui is allowed access? I just loaded Boinc on another rig and had no problem at all connecting with the new install.

Good questions texasfit:
1. Machine is on my network, and boinc can pass through my network firewalls on other machine.
2. Software firewall: I'll need to look deeper into that idea, the machine may have the xp firewall from sp2 active.

Ok, I uninstalled boinc, uninstalled the firewalls (software), rebooted, ran spybot, ran avg virus scan, defragged, and installed boinc. Now for the funny part.... When you try to start boinc, it flashes for a split second in the tool tray, and disappears. I cannot get boinc to open....
I'm a bit stumped on this one. Any suggestions other than fdisk?

Update:
After running:
spybot
cwshred
hijack this
AVG antivirus
Spyaudit finds:
Blazefind
NaviSearch
Search Assistant/nCase
PowerScan
PurityScan
SideSearch
All of that stuff remains, although a ton of porn trackers are gone (no it's not my machine).
Boinc still wont run so the work is not yet complete.

Sounds like fdisk time.
I'm not giving up yet!
You'd be doing your friend a favor to get rid of the crap/damage done though...
Stuoid Question? Are you sure your BOINC download is'nt corrupted?

Great point skab, but I did two downloads on the problem machine, and even pulled it from a usb drive that was used to download it on a different machine.
This does still leave the possibility that the current boinc seti software is the problem.
Have you tried to "detach" and then "attach" since you cleaned everything up and did your latest reinstall?

I cannot get the boinc client to run for more than a fraction of a second, then it's gone.
Boinc is installed, but cannot be run, so no user account is loaded, and no project URL.
Just ran into the same problem on the print server, been down for two weeks waiting for a vid card that never came (another story) but finaly bought one and installed. Started the comp up and boinc started crunching on units from two weeks ago, so I detached and tried to reattach. Kept coming up with the same unable to contact and would'nt reset. Took about eight tries and two reinstalls to get contact back, now if it'll just started loading some units..
Anyway that's how I managed to get it going, sounds like the same problem you were having so I figured I'd relate.

When you uninstalled BOINC, did you also delete the directory it leaves behind under Program Files. When it uninstalls it leaves behind WUs and some configuration/user info.
Had this happen once, and finally fixed it by deleting the install directory.
To: eaglescouter, check your clock settings, that made all the difference to mine. I'd reset my cmos and windows clock was of by 4 years so boinc wouldn't load units. Only thing it could be, I set the clock and two updates later cache is filled and we're crunching again.
