They smartened up and are using the Scotty time estimates.

Captain Kirk: When can you have the warp drive back up Scotty?
Scotty: Captain, it'll be at least 24 hours(meanwhile knows it'll take 2)
Captain Kirk: You have 6 Scotty!

2 Hours later, Captain Kirk praises Scotty for his miracle work and everyone is happy. :)
