dvd coaster problem...kinda

whenever i play a burned dvd on my computer, it will ethier not play at all or play part way and then the media player will freeze. it's done this with 4 different programs that will play dvds. i tried them out on a friend's computer and they worked fine so i know it's not a hardware issue. i can also play them fine in a normal dvd player hooked up to a tv. how do i fix this? i don't like my roommate and i would like to be able to watch a dvd without him being there being an intoxicated jackass.
