Here is the situation. I am trying to get some things removed from my step-fathers computer. Most of everything I have managed to find, fix or remove but one thing is still lingering on here.

I have used spybot and Norton thinking I might be able to remove it that way. I have searched the registry and tried to remove anything associated with it but it keeps coming up. Certain times while surfing the web instead of the page I am looking for comes up I get a search page and a URL that says donotlink....http://www.the search mall.com/404.html....donotlink. This is an agravating thing as in some cases it will not let you look at the page at all.

Has anyone seen this before or know a possible solution to removing it? Thanks in advance.

I can't resist this one, but as soon as a few people click that link and wind up with the same problem someone should find a solution. Come on people, you know you're curious.

here is the log file from hijack.... any suggestions?

I use SpyBot S&D, and Ad-Aware SE and they remove ALL spyware for me... files folders registry, everything. Both are free for download at Cnet

Well I deleted everything..... Its still coming up. I guess the next step is to uninstall his IE explorer again and start over.

I wouldn't recommend removing everything... may not cause problems truthfully, but its irresponsible, especially in light of it not being your PC.

First remove anything suspicious from Add/Remove programs - viewpoint should be uninstalled for one, there may be others you recognize as junk. You should also remove weatherbug, as it often comes with crap. If you want weather on your desktop, try out objectdock, as its handy and comes with a weather applet which features an temperature and weather icon (clouds/sun etc). It also comes junk-free.

Fix the following and delete the related files - delete anything with a directory or file name. You should do this from safe mode - if it will not allow you to delete, end task on the related process from task manager. Safe mode should allow you to clean everything - doing this from normal mode should be unsuccessful. To boot into safe mode, press F8 repeatedly at boot and you will be prompted for boot mode - select safe mode.

Also, make sure your spybot is updated - you are running an old version of Hijackthis. May I ask where you downloaded HJT from? I notice that VERY many people seem to use the version you have - the current version, last I checked is 1.98.2.

Try to fix and delete what I told you - that should be everything. Once that is done, download and update lavasoft Adaware, then do a full system scan. Then you can post a new HJT log with v1.98.2 and I would be happy to take a look to make sure your clean as a whistle. :)

BTW, Welcome back to the forums! It's nice to see people who have been around a while continue to come back even when life gets busy - I think thats a real testament to this place. ;) Hope to see you around, let me know how this goes for you.

EDIT: If you do not delete the related files, and perform these corrections from safemode, you will not fix the problem. ;) Most importantly make sure this file is deleted manually: C:\WINDOWS\System32\winsrm32.dll. HJT will fix the registry, but it will not delete the related files, and they must be deleted for complete removal. You should also delete these: C:\WINDOWS\localNRD.dll

If you are able to delete these, and fix the entries in the registry with HJT, your problem will be solved.

Download spywareblaster and immunize to prevent it in the future.
