What conductor on a 40 pin(80 conductor) IDE controls the LED? I remember seeing it a long while back on some pc or another. It might have been a harddrive enclosure of sort but I'd like to know. The search function didn't give me the answer this time. though it usually gives me the right answer.

Pin 39, which will be white on rounded 80-conductor cables. It's a switching ground connection so your LED will need current controlled 5Volt input via a resistor.
Pin 39 is also appearantly used for detecting the location of drives using cable select. So you WILL need to set the Master/Slave jumpers correctly or the drives will not show up.
As it says on that page, this method won't work with optical drives.

I've done it and worked out a more elegant quick connect system for the cables.

Which plug into the box powering the LEDs

Anyone sell cables for just this purpose? I dont like modding cables ever since my P133 started smoking. Yeah it was a hard drive malfunction that killed the bios.

Nope. It's a really easy mod if you have basic soldering skills.

Pin 39 is also appearantly used for detecting the location of drives using cable select. So you WILL need to set the Master/Slave jumpers correctly or the drives will not show up.
PIN 39 is only used for IDE activity, AFAIK PIN 28 (Spindle Sync or Cable Select) and/or PIN 34 (Passed Diagnostics) is used for CSEL/Master/Slave.
As it says on that page, this method won't work with optical drives.
It may or may not work with optical drives, it worked fine on both my (previous) optical drives (Lite-On CDRW and A-Open (Flashed to a Pioneer) DVD-ROM).
So Pin 39 is the THIRD TO LAST WIRE on MOST IDE cables
On 3 out of 4 cables I've done this mod it was the fourth to last wire.
If you use a 40 conductor cable Pin 39 is simply the second to last wire (NOT on red side)
I'm not too sure about that, I suggest you measure to make sure. (I told Zapwizzard about the fact that it isn't always the third to last wire).
Best way to check is to hook up a needle and a small pin to your multimeter, insert the pin into the connector (Hole 39, if you look at the connector with the holes facing you and the notch on top, it's the hole in the top right corner, I'll post a pic later), then simply stick the needle in the third or fourth last wire, when the multimeter beeps or says (close to) 0 Ohm you know you have the right wire.
That way you don't have to unnecessarily cut wires.

I have had issues using CSEL as a setting while using pin 39 modded cables.

Yes, the white wire in rounded 80-conductor IDE cables are almost always the signal lines and the colors are ground. You can use a multimeter and a pin to double check. I bothered to open the heads of my Rounded cable connectors to make sure.
