NVIDIA overclocking help with Artifacts

WHAT ARE ARTIFACTS EXACTLY???!!
how do i distinguish artifacts from lag?
especially in halo, which i always use to test my stablility, arew they bits of color that shouldnt be there? are they effects that come late?
please help me thanks!

they usually look like dots (white or black), boxes, or "tears" on the picture. totally different from "lag" experienced when the fps drops too low
