They r coming out with 512 cards soon. Did i make a poor investment buying a 6600GT AGP 128MB. Is 128mb enough for 2 more years? should i have got 256 9800pro?

No, I think you made the right choice over the 9800 Pro 256. Despite having less memory, the 6600GT has much better performance in almost everything and is a newer generation as well.

As for how future-proof it is, the 6600GT will obviously be a low-end card in 2 years, and you'll definitely feel the lack of memory. However, even though the 9800 Pro 256 has more memory, it won't be of much benefit, and the 9800 Pro overall will still be slower overall.

how much longer is 128MB video memory good for?

Depends on what games you play and how high you want the settings turned up. Mostly 128MB will limit you to compressed and/or smaller textures. Being able to use higher resolution textures goes a long ways in making models look nicer. Other things like normal/spec/environment maps will also eat into the memory so you may be limited in that too since its catching on finally.

Basiclly you'll have to turn all the games detail down to the level its at now. Not too bad I suppose until you start thinking about what your missing out on and the itch to buy a new card becomes unbareable. =)

I only run my games at 1024 on high.

All video cards these days are low-end in about 1 year or a little longer, you won't have to buy a new card within a year, but you probably won't be able to have the details on high without major slowdown. Do you even you even use any filtering, like AA? I assume you don't since you don't even play at a high resolutions.

One thing I'm curious about, if you are so worried about having the latest and greatest, future proof card, why would you buy a 128MB 6600GT? A 256MB 6800Ultra might help you sleep more soundly! Futhermore, if you are so concerned about milking 2 years of life out of a $200 videocard, would you be prepared to spend $700 right now if they were to come out with a 512MB performance card?
:p
The logic seems a little backwards...at least your choice of cards was good for the interim. The 6600GT should keep you playing for at least a year.

Yes 128mb in perfectly fine, the only game i know that uses more then 256mb or 256mb itself, is Doom3 and thats @ 1600x1200 Max details with high AA/AF, a 128mb should last for a few years even @ 1280x960 resoltuions.

Itsn o bigge dont worry about, 512mb is only a gimmick as of right now, in 2-3 years maybe then it will really be needed but right now no... lol

Just be happy with youre card its a great card.

128MB will be enough for a while. Heck, 64MB ti4200s still run most games real well, except for doom3 and farcry.
