I have never heard this, but it would be nice if it were possible. There was a bit of a stir a while back when someone mentioned that a CD-ROM could be modded into a DVD-ROM drive, but it soon disappeared for obvious reasons (It's Impossible). I doubt that this is possible.

Ok this is often touted by people saying oh yeah I can burn DVDs on a normal CD-ROM drive... this is total and complete BS, now to clarify, certain programs meant for encoding video streams can convert a 9 or 4.7gb video stream into a 700mb "VCD" stream and then burned onto normal CD-Rs this is when VCD was more supported on DVD players, which alot still do but less now than when DVD burners were a MUCH higher price. Another method was to take a DVD convert it to a third party compression codec(divx, xvid, ms-mpeg4) and then compress it enough to fit onto regular CD-R, no kind of software will ever be able to change the physical hardware required to make a CD burner designed to do what a DVD burner is supposed to do.

BTW: you still needed a DVD-ROM in order to read in the DVD streams to work with those programs... just another means of not having to buy a DVD burner

Check out this (http://www.burnworld.com/dvd/primer/dvdrecordable.htm) article. It covers some of the differences between burning a CD and burning a DVD, which should make clear why it's not possible for a CD burner to burn a DVD disk :)
