View Full Version : Problems with Doom3 and my 6800GT

This is about to drive me nuts!!

Heres the deal: Doom is incredible slow on my rig - 7 to 10 fps with AA at 4X and "High Qual" settings. Even with settings and res turned all the to the lowest I only get 20 to 25 fps. And the "Options" screen is very slow - the mouse lags when I try to change game settings. The image quality is fine (no artifacts or jagged lines) but the fps is painfully slow.

All other games play just peachy - CoD, for example, with all settings maxed and 1600 *1200 res fps is pegged at 60 and never goes below it. Benches are what I would expect - see sig. No problems with any artifacts with any games or 3Dmark tests.

This is a 3 month old video card and the rest of my rig is less than 2 months old. My psu is one of the best that $$ can buy (and new). And yes the 6800gt has its very own power cord plugged in. The OCZ 520w PowerStream gives 33amps on the 12v rail!!! I cant imagine tha power is my problem.

I had the same issue in my old NF-7/2500 Barton rig (with my current 6800GT). This makes me think something is wrong with my 6800GT.

I have tried:

*3 or 4 different driver versions
*Stock settings as well as "Manual" Overclock and "Auto" Overclock in coolbits
*Lowest settings in Doom3
*Reformatted and reinstalled WinXP
*Reinstalled Doom right after fresh install of WinXP with only chipset and video drivers installed(thinking Another program may have caused the slowdown)
*Tried another copy of Doom3
*Tried installing Doom on a seperate partition and on the WinXP partition
*Ive made sure no other program was running in the background
*Ive invented some new cuss words!!
*Ive yelled at the top of my voice
*Ive threaten to Spank my pc and send it to bed
*I have NOT YET tried the 6800GT in my AN35N/2500 Barton rig.

The other odd thing that I have noticed is that when I uninstall and then reinstall Doom and then go immediately into the game after installing (without closing Doom) the frame rates are high (pegged at 60) but the IQ looks like ***T :-/ . Then When I close the game and exit to Win, then go back into the game I get the slow fps again  .

BTW, this is my second 6800. My first one was a 6800nu that I RMAd because of artifacts.

Yeah, it could be a faulty 6800GT but why would other games play fine and benches are great with no artifacts. The ONLY problem that I see is with DOOM3.

Should I RMA this sucker and try another? Im not really a huge Doom3 player - but I at least want it to play right.

Sorry for the LONG post - but this truly has me stumped  .

HELP!!

Hey Sen, I know you can help me!! :)

is the gt on its own run of molexs or at least the first one in a run?

Hey bro, thanks for the quick reply :) . Yeah, my gt has its own power cord with nothing else on it. The OCZ PowerStream has 2 "special" power cords with only ONE molex at the end of each (for HDDs and video card) - for "clean" power I spose.

try using some of the console codes for doom 3 , they might be set wrong. A google search will provide plenty. I know by default doom 3 sees alot of 256mb cards as only 64mb.
Something is wrong there because i get about 40-60fps depending on how many guys are on the screen bombing the hell out of me, i run at 1024x768 4xAA on ultra resolution. and my computer is much slower its a p4 1.6ghz o/ced to 2.2ghz 1 gb RDRAM and geforce 6800gt

Memory issue. Those timings are some of the worst timings Ive ever seen...2.5-4-3-10 ?...on ram rated for 2-2-2-5 ? Your probably causing a data stall across the AGP slot with the huge textures DOOM3 uses. I understand the attraction of 2.6Ghz on a 2.2Ghz chip but you should have bought PC4000-4500 ram not 3200 if ultra hi clockspeed was the goal....I'd recommend at least going to 250x10 with 2.5-3-3-5 to test if it will keep the data flow from stalling.

I have a S754 3400 running XMS Corsair 3200 @ 2-2-2-5 at stock speeds and have found the game plays flawless....

When did you get your vcard? In other words did you format after you put it into your machine. It could be a driver conflict.

Also, what are your temps like. Perhaps your card is thermal-throtteling?

Are you using the original copy or a "backup copy"? I read that the gaming industry has protected thier copyrights be causing problems similar to yours (extremely slow play) to any copied games.

Kind of a humorous way to protect a copyright eh?

I know something is wrong or else.....sorry...its frustrating.

Anyway thanks for the input CyberFed. Good idea on the console codes, but Ive done countless uninstalls/reinstalls of Doom3. Wouldnt the console codes be normal when I do a fresh install? Unless something is goofed with WinXP registry, But Ive also done a format/fresh install of WinXP...?

Have you tried a different driver. That 66.93 is a bad driver. I would dump it. I would try to clean your registry. entries and do a nice clean install of some 66.81!
I promise your card is fine.

I had the same "slowdown" problem with the same gt card in my nf7-s/2500 Barton rig. I did a clean format/install of WinXP when I build my current (A64) rig. Same problem exists. I have a seperate partition for WinXP, and programs. I have another partition for "My Documents" type stuff. I did a format/reinstall of the XP partition when I built my current rig.

See sig for temps - these are accurate as best I can tell. Besides, all other games, and 3Dmark01, '03, '05 all seem to be inline with what they should be....so I dont think its thermal throttling. Also I get the slowdow even on the "Set-up" page in Doom....before I even start playing the game!!

Ah.. sorry. vid card temps: mid to upper 60s during games.

check ur display properties and make sure verticle sync is disabled. that caused me to drop about 15 fps playin doom 3. also while ur there try setting it so all things are application controled. see if that helps

Um this might be a stupid answer but when i installed it windows made an extra icon on top of the existing one, so when i clicked it made the game come up twice. This drove me insane till i figured it out.

Thanks all for the input!!

ok I put my gt into my AN35N/2500 Barton rig. I wanted to get a "PURE" test of my gt with only minimal software installed and on a completely different rig. So...I Completely reformatted the HDD and erased the partitions on my AN35/2500 Barton rig. I reinstalled WinXP, nvidia chipset drivers, nvidia drivers (67.03). Then I installed Doom3.

With only minimal software installed I then played the game. Damn!! Everything seems fine!! I must have some sort of program installed on my main drive in my a64 rig. I cant figger this out though. I did a format and WinXP reinstall on my WinXP/Programs partition and was still having this issue. Could something from another partition (on the same drive) have caused a conflict?? I admit I had NOT tried the 67.03 drivers before tonight, but I had tried a couple other 6x.xx driver.

Well, so far looks like the gt is fine. I never thought there was any problem with the gt since all other games and benchmarks are just fine.

I guess I need to reformat my whole main HDD then reinstall everything....again :eh?:
