View Full Version : 300watt PS causing CPU to overheat?
Guys i have a 300watt Power Supply running 8 IDE devices and a new Tbird 1.4ghz, but cpu is getting way too hot?
Anybody knows if the PS will have anything to do with the overheating? I'm Just bought a new heatsink by coolermaster DP5-6I31A
Any Ideas?
If you've got 8 ide devices I would increase my power immed. I've got 5 ide devices (4 drives and 1 cdrom), all my memory slots are full and have 3 fans running always. I just recently upgraded to a Enermax 431w (up from a 300w) and although I did not see any decrease in temps... All my voltage readings moved up to respectable numbers.
I would definately upgrade to a 450w or bigger if your running that much equip. If not for anything else than overtaxing your psu and sending it to an early death (burnout)

the cooler master is junk
ditch it and get something from like global win, glaciator or swiftech
Sky is right. I fail to see the electronics behind a PSU causing a CPU to run hotter. You are running a busy box all the same and a better PSU would certainly ensure it not failing under that load. Also, make certain your case is adequately ventilated, to remove all that heat and get an HSF that will work hard for you.
Hoot
if your psu is too low then you will not have enuff wattage to power everything and wala you cpu fan isnt geting its proper current...batteries in the flashlight are low but not dead so to speak...if your half decent at math you could probably use P.I.V formula to caclulate youre power consumption used by your system

true with that amount of IDE drives and an Athlon you need good power, if its over heating try the Enermax dual fan PSUs they are good because they suck the hot aire away from the CPU and push it out of the case, I have just ordered one it I did see a 3C drop in temp...

the fans on the dual fan enermax psu arent that effective........it's only with a low A.........the 90m fan next to the power cord that blows out is only 0.23A and the 120mm fan that sucks in air is only around 0.18A if i remember correctly
unless you do a mod on the psu u cant get better fans in thre

sky, what are you on about, the fans are 80mm and 92mm, if anyone can fit those fans in a psu i will get it, the enermax are good, the 92mm fan is temp controled so when it gets hotter it spinns faster, i don't think you psu it ther problem, whet are you case fans like
ya there is the ticket add more stuff to the box so the power supply has less power to disperse between them all including your primary cooling...cpu fan...
My case temperature is not bad at all but yea like you guys said i did need it a bigger PS, I went to one of local stores here in miami and got me a 400watts ( the biggest one available at the stores :( ) I finally changed it and no much improvement. As far as the powersupply causing my sistem to get warmer cause of the PS's temperature that doesnt really affect me cause me PS is outside the case as you guys can see on my picture :)
I'm getting a better heatsink wich should help me lot more than what i have, since i've been one of the victims from CoolerMaster's junk :)
Thanks alot for your help and i'll let you all know how i'm doing after i get a better HSF ;)
Take care you all and stop o/c those cpus :)

I'm just mad cause i cant O/C mine! :(
My heatsink is such a piece of $h1Te that i even had to downclocled my 1.4 to 1.2 so that i could use it without getting it too hot LOL.
But soon i'll have a better heatsink :)
i tell you thermaltake tech makes the volcano 6cu it is the cats...uhhmmm...meow :)
