hey looks like prices are falling already!
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-145-107&depa=1
225 USD as of this post... that's a cheap agp6600gt for newegg :D
sorry if this is old news to anyone, but its news to me ^^
EDIT: looking over the specs, this jumped out at me: GDDR3/900MHz...
isn't that slow? i thought 6600gt was supposed to be 1000MHz?

Look at the nvidia site... AGP 6600GT is rated 450mhzx2 for memory speed

well went there and found this: http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce_6600.html
900MHz is indeed the spec, but then xfx and apollo agp cards are 1000, according to newegg (which may be a bad source for specs)...
it would seem these cards with slower (spec'd) ram would overclock less eh?
That is what NV has as reference spec's. The manuf can make them however they want, I imagine within reason, reminded of Gainwards GS series that surpasses ultra spec's.
From what I gathered, the PCI-E version 6600GT has the mem clocks of 1000mhz and the AGP version has the mem clocks of 900mhz. But I guess this probably varies from manufacturer to manufacturer just as was pointed out.

They dummed down the RAM clock as not to overly-stress out the PCI-E-->AGP bridge chip.
The higher the ram speed the higher the bandwith. Since most companies cool with a passive fan they feared it would overheat. Hence why they pulled the speed back

Still, even with the 100mhz diffrence on the memory side, the 6600GT AGP still is on par with its PCI-E counterpart

How?? i imagine the PCI-E would be somewht ahead of its agp ...

I dont know how, but the AGP refrence version was keeping up with the PCI-E refrence version, and even pulling ahead in the high resolutions
Actually I saw certain tests where the pci-e was behind the agp. I am looking for it now.

Let's get things straight people:
The nvidia reference spec is for 900mhz ram on the AGP boards, though since day one XFX has been shipping theirs with 2ns GDDR3 factory clocked at 1000mhz. In fact they are releasing 1.6ns boards now as well. BFG and several other manufacturers are releasing boards at 1000mhz (or 1050 in BFG's case) while a few to cut corners and save money are using either cheaper ram or are not confident enough in the quality of their boards to go beyond the reference 900mhz spec.
Notice how lame the factory cooling solutions are...no provision for memory cooling and high potential risk of dislodging the thermal compound. Cheap ********. :temper:
