So, my family recently changed ISP to one where we are allowed to have a server, and with an internet connection that actually makes it viable to have a server. Our previous uppload speed was 256kbps, now it's 1024kbps. So i've been toying with the idea of putting up a webserver and an FTP (not for illegal purpuses, for school projects, webpages, BNCs etc.). But, my mum says it's NOT safe to keep a computer on 24/7, almost 365 days a year. She's afraid that it will catch on fire and burn the house down while everyone is sleeping. But I KNOW it won't do that if you keep the computer clean from dust and not in a corner etc. Now, anyone know any links to some hard proof? or can anyone who keeps their computer on for long periods of time explain WHY it's safe and not that dangerous to keep a computer on 24/7? Hosting a BNC, for example, on a computer that's only on during the day is pretty pointless, same with a www server...

Oh, and is anyone else in the same predicament as I am?

If I am not mistaken David (http://www.ocforums.com/member.php?userid=1916) had the same problem. He tried everything to convince his mom to no avail. He finally moved out;) So that is an option but you should PM him because I know he tried almost everything. Good luck:D

It's ADSL2 technoligy. 8048kbps in and 1024kbps out. My ISP has all ports open except 25, but if you want to host an email server you can negotiate that with them. (due to some finnish law). Costs 68€ per month, no limits.

A BNC is something that keeps you logged in to IRC 24/7, even though your comp is shut off. Pretty usefull.

I have run all 3 of my computers 24/7 for as long as I have had them. (Almost 2 years for one) No problems. One is watercooled and the other 2 are aircooled.

I was, and am in the same position.

My parents have put their foot down because:
Power cosumption
Fire Risk
Noise

Possible comebacks:
It doesnt drink *that* much power. Perhaps unplug any lights or unnecessary fans. It still doesnt use that much power - perhaps offer to put money towards the power bill?
There are many many fire risks in any house, for example TVs on standby etc. Try suggesting temp monitoring programs that shut the PC down when it overheats, keeping it away from flammable material.
Water cooling is a good option. I had a Thunderbird 1100 watercooled (ghetto style with a pond pump, plastic pump, and plastic tubing. No fans) and it was silent. No-one knew it was on. Quiet Seagate, Samsung or Hitatchi drives are near silent.

You can also tell them about the databases that run 1000's of computers 24/7. Don't let them think it's all special equipment either. Alot of hosts will now use standard tower pc's because they are cheaper than rackmounts.
