View Full Version : Newbie that can use some advice!
Very new to this and would like some advice on what CPU's to look at. I'm not really interested in creating an ultimate beast, but just something that will scoot along pretty well. I currently have an Abit BH6 board that I would like to use and keep for a while. I've been reading about the potential of the P III 500-800 CPU's and I like what I see. Some advice for this newbie would really be appreciated. Thanks

Hello and welcome. I'd say go with a Celeron 2 800 MHz with a cDo stepping. I mean Celeron`s are the bomb. With an 800 you can get up to 1066 and even 1200 out of it.

personally i would go with a P3 800 because it now is in cDo stepping and should oc very well, also if for some reason it doesnt oc you have a nice fast cpu to start with

Well I have a BH6 MB also bios SS ver. 1.01. My MB has only up to 133FSB, but have heard of other BH6s going higher. So even if I did get a celly 800 it would only be 9 x 133 = 1197 so almost a 1.2ghz. And usually celly 800 with the right stepping can easily gain you 1.2ghz. So make sure yours go higher than 133 fsb. I have a celly 600 and just want to go 1ghz with it. Will up date once I get my vantec HSF in.
I have a Celeron 800 and it cruieses at 1066@133fsb. Just pick up a good heatsink fan combo if you plan on overclocking your new cpu. Peaple have been having good luck at overclocking the 600 Celerons as well, so they might be worth looking into.
you can also go to the cpu database (from the overclockers.com main page) and see what other ppl got out of their chips.
I will definately be looking into those CPU's. On another note, is it always necessary to run a modified BIOS when OC'ing? I'm not really that advanced and was wondering if I could run the with the original BIOS? Where do you get these modified versions anyway? Thanks for all the help and I'm sure I'll be asking more later.

If you have the cash get a P3 800...if not go for the celly 800...the p3 has the cache 2 but the celly has a slower one...they're both good o/c...hope this helps...
My heart is set on the P3 800! The next question is, are there any performance difference between the Slot and Socket P3 800's? And as far as the pricing goes, they are pretty much the same after you factor in the slotket. Also what do you guys think about the Asus Slotket? Good? OK? I can't seem to find an Abit slotKET 3 anywhere besides "ebay", I hate bidding on stuff!!! Thanks.
