I bought an refurbed IC7 from Newegg a while ago, and just got aorund to setting it up. To make a long story short (no pun intended?) the first time I started the computer up something snapped and I saw a little spark near the top of the motherboard. It also made a high pitched squal.

Anyway: so I have the motherboard out right now and am looking it over to figure out wtf is wrong with it and if it's salvagable. I look at the back of the motherboard and I see someone has soldered a resistor between the ground and 12v pins on both the CPU fan connector and NB fan connector.

I'm not really sure what my question is. I guess, did the previous owner of the motherboard sabotage it? Why a resistor?

Edit: Upon another examination, s/he also unsoldered FB43.
